Dad finally said that i should stop reading fiction because that's not how the real world works and that i should learn useful skills to improve my life and help people instead of only helping myself forever.
what books fit in that definition?
i was reading Principles of Economy by Mankiew but it's just feels like ideological propaganda and i'm disgusted by the superficiaity of self-help books.

(also read books by economists like Principles of Political Economy by J.S. Mill, Manual of Political Economy by Pareto, The General Theory by Keynes, etc. etc. )

I think actual meaningful skills cannot be learned from books in isolation. Take a community college class on auto mechanics or go to a trade school for welding or something.

You shouldn't read a book for such a purpose until you have a task laid out ahead of you. For example, you see an opening for an apprentice to a carpenter. After reaching out, you should read a few general books on carpentry, and if you get the job, read more specific books pertinent to what kind of work he does.

he says that he wants me to be a professional because i had a everything going for me and that i should compete with other people who also have the support of their parents. So trade school may not be the ideal for me.

Sorry to hear about your dad. He seems to think being a cog in the machine is how it works, but really it's the ones who venture outside of that who run things (either that or who inherit their position). What he means by help people is make money for other people. You can be a wagie and still enjoy literature. I don't see where he thinks his shows he likely watches comes from without creative types.

So venturing outside of being a cog lets you be a bigger cog? Fuck man if that's all we had on earth I'd fucking neck myself. Humans are vital, passionate, creative forces of nature, do whatever you want OP.

I get paid a large amount of money to do a job that's very very easy if you approach it in a disconnected way. I'm not passionate about the subject of accounting, but rather my ability to perform within a field that I don't particularly have to try in. CS is quite similar. Since we're on /lit/, the book Radical Alterity by Guillaume/Baudrillard has a section where Baudrillard talks about the idea of affectation as a strategy of performance within a system of simulation. If you're into rather academic philosophy, that's exactly what I'm doing.
