I truly believe that Taleb will go down as one of the greatest thinkers/writers of our time. "The Incerto" will be up there among the greatest collections of literature. For ages intellectuals have viewed themselves as masters of being able to predict events and understand the world, but Taleb shows us the reality of uncertainty and how we all act so smart after the fact. Black Swan really underscrones this by how our "logical" views of the world are really mostly just post-hoc rationalizations. His main thesis Antifragile shows how expectations of disorder are better built into the system. Skin in the Game shows us that, no only is morality best determined when one has a stake in the outcome, but it is literally IMPOSSIBLE to be moral UNLESS you do, so any morality from-above is pointless unless you are directly involved.

I also like his approach to writing; he doesn't like to research things and generally only likes to write down thoughts if he remembers them, because in his mind if he isn't able to recall something then it probably wasn't interesting enough to remember. In his mind if he has to research a topic to make a point, then the point itself is probably not very genuinely conceived.

He's not a great thinker, but he's done an excellent job of popularizing and assembling knowledge that was already out there and putting it into a form which helps it propagate. Particularly Ergodicity Economics, until Taleb and Ole Peters, the only person I'd ever heard discuss ergodicity outside of atomic physics was Stuart Kaufman

>> No.15244276

No, Darwinism describes how the fittest in an ecosystem survive. Antifragility describes the properties of certain complex systems to react and grow fitter due to volatility.
They are related but Darwinism describes a competitive environment whereas Antifragility may describe a single system.

I am not OP, but I agree with everything he says.

Most people who criticize Taleb have not read the whole Incerto cover to cover. The vast majority of criticisms are already addressed there. It's not a meme work like the ones you find in continental or analytic philosophy, but a true masterpiece of skepticism and rigorous thought. However, the epistemic standards it sets are *too high*, so bullshit academics get extremely sensitive about it, as Taleb shows that they aren't worthy of their salaries and should be frying hamburgers instead.
