I think a degree in philosophy and literature/english is a waste of time. especially if you're just planning to publish/read and that's it
Unless you're gonna be a teacher or some shit, not worth it.

I got a Great Texts degree for undergrad and I've never regretted it. But one big reason for this is that even when I was 18 I knew I wanted to be a writer and a poet and make great art. So in that regard, reading the Western Canon wasn't "useless" for me, it was essentially vocational training. I already knew that all the books I was going to read were things I would put to use.

I do agree that it is probably not a good idea to get a literature degree "just because." You should take the classes but it should probably not be what you get your BA in.

I'm not saying the western canon is useless or telling you to not be a poet. What I'm saying is hard work and practice will get you to make amazing works, not a degree on a wall.

All degrees are useless if you won't make use of them. English and philosophy aren't useless and being a teacher/professor isn't the only thing you can do, they're actually rather flexible if you have an ounce of creativity. But I'm not doing English because of money, it's my calling and I don't care about what others say about my degree.

1. it's good to have an education
2. it's good to have a degree

I don't know what people find so confusing about this. It's not a fucking video game where every decision is affirming some particular branch with thematic constraints.

Besides, philosophy applies to everything and employers actually do look well upon it. Philosophy is a financially high-performing major, and that's despite an abysmal job availability within academia.

This is a difficult thing to convey to people, but there is a significant difference studying in university and it's impossible to understand that from the outside. But I'll concede this:
In terms of sheer possibility, sure, it is possible for an autodidact to simulate everything that you'd benefit from in university.
But they won't, and you won't. Autodidacts are almost universally and significantly worse at what they do while also being oblivious to where they stand. The immersion, breadth of exposure, access to the perspectives of people who've read things you haven't, and company of diverse perspectives does tremendous work.
I didn't feel like I even got that much out of my professors, there was something else in the school environment that surprised me in its impact.
> I guess philosophy is well liked but it's not exactly a skill people are looking for
Philosophy means critical thinking, all subjects become easier after philosophy and philosophy lends you tools for all of them

There's nothing wrong with majoring in English as long as you do other staff in your undergrad career like interning or writing for one of your school's newspapers (Whether it be literary, satire, or just a regular ass newspaper). Get experience and make connections.

there are some, and i mean some people who are genuinely capable of self teaching, but the vast majority of people who describe themselves as autodidacts are really just dilettantes larping as intellectuals. easy to do when you have no feedback coming in to dispel your pretensions

I think everyone is capable of self teaching, it's just astronomically unlikely to compare to the rigor of the formal environment.
But you're right that it's hard to have an understanding of the true demographic with it being obscured by the more vocal dilettantes. I think about this often, that the world is full of quiet geniuses who keep to themselves.

Why do you think this, OP? I want to do philosophy for graduate school but for the reasons you mentioned I’m considering sticking with economics (my BS) for practicality. I already have a job and cost isn’t really an issue for me though.

Completely agree and at one point, you would’ve been studying and even writing philosophy if you studied anything at University but the problem is what does it matter if you can’t go back and study something else after philosophy? You’ll be better at learning everything without ever having the chance to do it formally.

Also, I've chosen literature knowing that is hard to land a job with it. But my main intent is to work with my parents and in the meantime, to work in the literature field, even if it isn't a really paying job. Anyway Literature is teaching me a lot and shaping the way I think. From this point of view is really useful
