don't read critical analysis of a text before you read the actual text. Read and parse it yourself, maybe even reread it before you venture out and read the surrounding texts. What someone might call a misinterpretation of a philosophical text for example, could really just be a reinterpretation or new application of the ideas therein. Reading complementary texts before you are familiar and conversant in the source text will just railroad you into the canonical interpretations.

Books generally are terrible gifts that say you have the audacity to make demands of people's leisure while not in their presence.
