Philosophers are not prophets. The intelligent individual does not take everything that whatever philosopher of the week says as gospel. You reason for yourself and you pick out the good bits and abandon that which you think does not hold. These men are fallible. They are only men. It's perfectly possible for them to be insightful in some areas and flawed in others.

The problem with Nationalism is that by extension, it is simply a facet of tribalism, that every human will display and attach himself to, be it their nation, their football team or their gang.
Tribal affiliations that seem to be the most coherent and productive ones seem to be ones of national nature, hence the ability to organize states along national lines. To take one's pride in that might be small-minded, but at the end of the day is a default coping mechanism for the human animal that has to derive a sense of belonging to operate as a sane member of the society around him. The problems start if you get alienation with one's surroundings or a misplaced identity that does not correspond to one's surroundings in a positive way.

Thhis reveals a fundamental flaw with philosophers and their ideas - they are too often separated from the base human fundamentals and psychology of man as an animal that is under constant process of self-domestication.

The only philosopher that grasped the raw fundamental of human psyche was Nietzche when he talked about Will to Power, which by large can easily describe the transformation of the ape into man and the growth of motivation from purely instinctual to one of meaning and pursuit of one's limits once the human mind becomes aware of both its base nature but at the same time ensared by the aspiration to transcend that. This first developed into civilization and self-domestication but then evolved into the race for transcendence and setting of new limits, which is where Nietzsche's ideas gather steam.
