15124300 No.15124300 [Reply] [Original]

I'm a 21 year old with ample means and time. I want to be capable of theorizing a complex/original philosophical system by the time I'm 30. I have read a little bit in the history of philosophy and literature, but for the sake of this exercise just assume I'm starting from nothing. What should I read and do in the next 9 years to get there?

probably read philosophy instead of asking "how do i read philosophy" on 4chan

I guess you would have to read immensely. And have someone more knowledgeable by your side, like a mentor to help you progress.

for an introductory text in philosophy - Robert Paul Wollf "About Philosophy"
learn basic formal logic and rules of argumentation
if you have any particular topic you're more interested in - read something about it on SEP (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
once you're done with that start with the Greeks - first mythology and history of ancient Greece, then pre-Socratics etc.

>> No.15124371

considering historiographical research on the history of philosophy is extensive, the hard sciences are developing at an overwhelming rate and that pos-posmodern philoophy is incomprehensible and irrelevant, it's impossible for a single individual to develop a original or even complex philosophical system.

There are many ways you can do it, I would say that what will help most is to have familiarity with contemporary problems in philosophy, along with a good grounding in traditions of philosophy.

Essentially you need to know what to solve and have the inspiration to solve it.

2) read Guenon, individual philosophical "systems" are all inherently flawed and wrong by definition

how does the development of science make it impossible to create an original philosophy? Should future philosophers have an advanced knowledge of the sciences?

>> No.15124988

you are 21, go and do something in the world, THEN read philosophy, then you will be able to merge the thoughts of other men with your own original experience --> original philosophy

if you just consume books, this will go nowhere original thats for sure.

Post-fall physics as we know it will be fixed and thus not work the same way in the world to come. I guess you could study the new physics of that world but the danger is too high to get drawn into various materialist nonsense while we are here, so you'll never get to see the next world in its full glory.

you don't get to just plan being a genius. you're just passionate about something, have some discipline to study the subject in-depth, and some creativitity and intuition to come with new ideas that are relevant to today's world
if you're just gonna be like "uhmm yeah I'm gonna make a philosophical system in 10 years". you're not gonna make it with that attitude

Well you're not going to succeed in this then, because philosophy isn't something you can just half-ass in or neglect the serious, substantial reading.

you're going to want to combine fields. i suggest a grounding in pure mathematics and game theory to go with the greeks and philosophy. and at the very least you'll want to add computer science and consider the implications of television. this won't even take you up to the year you were born, but you'll have a much firmer foundation of reasoning through which you can find insight into the problems of the age. and in the meantime i suggest you get comfy with the implications of internet balkanization and crypto-currency. it's almost comical how unprepared people are for what is so obviously coming

>I want to be capable of theorizing a complex/original philosophical system by the time I'm 30
This is a backwards goal. No philosopher who theorized an original system did so because they woke up one day and decided that might be a neat thing to do. They theorized an original system because they were struck with original thoughts and were compelled to communicate them.
Unless you want to do this more as an artistic personal project then yeah, just read philosophy.

You'll have a better time with philosophy and better your chances of original thought if you refine your interests to be more purely concerned with learning and letting that be the desired accomplishment. And as you study philosophy you very, very quickly get a sense of what track you want to be on, because there are many for different sorts of temperaments.

A broad and comprehensive survey of western philosophy, in my opinion, would be this:

Heraclitus, Parmenides, Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Descartes, Hobbes, Locke, Leibniz, Hume, Spinoza Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Marx, Nietzsche, William James, Heidegger, Wittgenstein, Quine, and at least one or two other continentals.

Unavoidable Essentials: Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Hume, Kant, Hegel.

Philosophers that most benefit the interest in system building:
Plato, Leibniz, Spinoza, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Deleuze

Philosophers that might sober you from the interest in system building:
Hume, Nietzsche, William James, Wittgenstein

But yeah again there are many threads in the philosophical tradition, you'll figure out what you like. I recommend taking philosophers you resonate with and looking at who they influenced.
