I have no idea if the terminology is correct, but what he is doing is the typical christian cope, where they are trying to assert some rationality or truth into to literal religious texts. I did that as a preteen, until you realize the circumstantial nature of it all; they are just moral codes of the time in story form. But, I don't think trying to find conjunctives and patterns between these stories is abandonment of materialism; cope yes.
