What is pop history and what makes it lazy?

>> No.15062440

>>15062414
if you can pick it up at barnes & noble, and it was recommended on fox news by Sean Hannity, odds are its pop history.
in general:
1) history that plays fast and loose with citations; basically, anything that's not well researched. my specialty is ancient history, and its easy to spot a lazy historian: they'll describe something insane and unlikely Nero allegedly did, and they'll just cite Suetonius. either they don't have sources at all, or they're completely uncritical of their sources.
2) history written outside academia.
3) history that focuses more on retelling events, rather than analyzing events. if the book is just a narrative, its pop history.
4) the tendency to focus too much on individual rulers, at the expense of understanding underlying trends (pop history is still stuck in Great Men thinking).
5) history that isn't trying to find or understand anything NEW.
most pop history is just trash narratives, completely uncritical. its entertainment disguised as knowledge. and half the time, its somehow trying to stay urgent by tying whatever event to United States in INSERT YEAR OF PUBLISHING.
the truth is, real history is dense and challenging. its concerned a lot with seemingly insignificant details. its a long struggle to determine what happened, and why it happened. books that offer easy narratives usually aren't teaching you anything

>> No.15062448

>>15062440
>2) history written outside academia.
as an addendum to my post. im sure there's good history written outside academia. that note is just a general guideline. its not a rigid law

The last great history book I read from Nero by Edward Champlin. My guilty pleasure is anything about the bad Caesars. I read Miriam Griffin's biography of Nero, and then Champlin's. Miriam Griffin offers a great account of Nero's political failure, and Champlin offers a great account of Nero's artistic/cultural success.
the thing is, they're both fucking dense, and have the tendency to get bogged down in details.
if you like to read about shit Caesars like i do, Suetonius's The Twelve Caesars is unironically a good place to start. a wild, fun, readable, half-accurate primary source. the ambiguity is part of the fun. Suetonius had access to the Imperial archives, so he knew more than any modern person does. but Suetonius also inserted unsubstantiated gossip, and didn't distinguish between the gossip and the state secrets. his biographies are puzzles. historians will spend the next 1000 years still fixating on them.
if you're still intrigued after The Twelve Caesars, its worth trying the denser reads.
for Nero, i recommend Miriam Griffin first, then Edward Champlin

bitching about people reading popular history is one of the stupidest, most pretentious things I've seen on here in a while.

you're a historian, are you? yes, you seem like a right academic. You took 2 300 level courses while working towards your undergraduate history degree that you never finished, and in those classes you had to write one paper that introduced you to the world of online academic journals, and now you think you know some secret the rest us (who were smarter than to become "historians") have yet to discover.

If they want to read that latest biography of Napoleon they saw on the shelf at Barnes & Noble, more power to them. They're better off than if they hadn't.

I find the dumbed-down simple explanations faster and easier to process as an introduction into a new subject before taking on more advanced literature on the topics. They got me through a lot of college classes as alternate reference books. Also, I enjoy the funny single cell comic strip given at the start of each chapter.

I've got nothing. I notice we both have Poe, Homer, Tolstoy, Melville, and your typical collection of free religious texts given out by door to door missionaries. Same. I got mine from a door to door missionary on campus back in college, about a decade ago. I think my favorite part of that book ... was the section saying that true power is having the ability to kill others and the strength not to, that to use power to harm others is a weakness, while having power and not using it for evil is a strength, true power, the power of a strong moral character.

the shelves you pointed out didn’t include mine (>>15061685 #). But your attack on others’ was both unjustified and unnecessary.

Also, I find it wonderful that your “specialty” is “ancient history”. That only spans thousands of years, thousands of cultures, kingdoms... you get my point? probably not.

My point is if you were so well read when it comes to academic literature, you would know that people who have “specialties” focus on a very narrow concentration. What I’m saying is you’re full of shit. And your response, to which I’m currently responding, is probably the most puerile post I’ve seen on here in a long time. Hey if you dug Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, Check out Camus' essays, in english there's a collection of them called Lyrical and Critical Essays that dovetail nicely with the other two. Very good response even if people are salty over it. I think they're having this knee jerk feeling that you're saying that engaging history=pop history, which you obviously aren't.

One gripe: Barnes and Noble actually has a shockingly good history section at most stores. I've been surprised by how many serious academic works I've found at B&N, even if it's mixed in with some trash.

>>15069439
>>15066237
Was anything he said actually substantively wrong though? Pop history is mostly politicized garbage. Also saying he's not a real historian for not getting a postgrad degree is fairly ridiculous. Getting a PHD in History is one of the most useless ways to throw away hundreds of thousands of dollars. An undergrad degree at a good institution teaches you all the fundamental methodologies of academic historical work.
