Tbh I simply don't understand poetry at all, so I couldn't tell you if she's good or not.

Rupi can't grow out of her style of shittiness because it's inherent to her perspective and public image, so she's going to be a distant memory in <5 years.

You seem sincere. I've picked up a small stack of lit zines over the years that constitute the depth of my appreciation for poetry, but I have no way of sharing them. I picked this up at a secondhand store in Asheville and it is seriously great. There's some vaguely identitarian / mall goth passages here and there, but you can just filter it out. Apparently you can get this on Amazon.

Dude I'm not trying to make excuses.
I'll use horror as an example: there isn't any copy of say something from Ligotti or House of Leaves. Now you can think that they are worse or better, the argument still stands that you would have to order them online at double a reasonable price. So, a lot of people who like me have explored their taste by navigating the library and picking up interesting things on a whim are pretty much stranded when it comes to finding gems in poetry or horror, for examples. I have to resort to the internet, and I have, but you think a lot of people do? And are willing to?
This is why I'm mad at her. Not because she prevents me, but because she obscures so many other poets.
And yeah, there are lots of copies -maybe not compared to the whole libraries but way to many in an already fairly small section.

Poetry in tonal languages does not have meter, since those languages don't syllabic stresses like European languages tend to have. Formal restrictions in those languages are word counts and tone patterns, not meter. Meter is a kind of pattern that's available to particular languages, and other languages don't have it but have other ways of patterning the language. Patterns are the essence of poetry, not any one kind of pattern.

No, it's not. Words and syllables are different units (such that it's possible for a line to have double the word count as a line with an identical syllable count), and languages such as English do not have tones in the relevant sense. In, say, Classical Chinese, almost every word is one syllable, and there are very few distinct syllables so, tones differentiate words. One syllable said in a high tone is a different word than the same syllable said in a low tone. There are also rising and falling tones. High and low are "level tones" and rising and falling are "oblique tones". Poetic forms often require strict tonal patterns, such as: "oblique, oblique, level, level, oblique/ level, level, oblique, oblique, level/ level, level, level, oblique, oblique/ oblique, oblique, level, level, level."
It has nothing to do with meter; meter does not exist in languages like that.

Kaur is shit.

but my opinion is that Kaur is not bad because she...doesn't adhere to a particular form....it is that she is shallow, rom-commy, boils all her metaphor down to the same handful of subjects...

Being fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese, I think the biggest disadvantage in English poetry compared to romance languages is how stilted it feels, especially classical poetry with strict meter and rhyming schemes
Romance words have a perfect balance regarding vowel consonant distribution, so each word flows from another seamlessly, like a chain because they are phonetically "open"
English words are generally more self-contained, a significant portion of them are monosyllabic even, making sentences less compact rhythmically speaking
Then there's the concordance aspect but that's too much to write in a post

English is not the biggest offender however, having a strong Latin and French influence
Dutch and Scandinavian languages sound like a pig grunting because the consonant sounds are much more prevalent

These writers also love to cite Hemingway in defense of their style. Frankly, whereas Hemingway thought everything out meticulously and omitted everything that didn't strictly need to be shown, these writers seem to skip the part where you extensively develop your ideas, opting instead to skip to the minimalistic product. The citing of canonical authors as influences is nothing more than a vain attempt to win credibility.
