Between this and his frothing Greta hate, Dan Simmons has some truly lulzy opinions:

It is kind of illuminating how truly cringe and stupid writers can be who have written good books.

I read The Terror and thought it was amazing. Tried some of his other books, read articles and watched some videos here and there. Holy shit he’s the biggest midwit boomer ever. I guess when you have years working on a book it often can end up much more intelligent and well thought than you would otherwise be capable of.

hyperion is bettter because rise of endmyion ended the series :(

my order is hyperion>endymion>fall>rise

also anyone know any other good "road trip" style sci-fi books like endymion? thanks

>> No.14992717

Hyperion is an amusing trainwreck. Endymion is pure medical-grade cringe. Simmons is an idiot.

>> No.14992813

what dont you like about them? the 2nd half of Roe was the real cringe because:
>hanging air takes forever
>the sex scenes
>raul getting cucked by himself
>infodumps

the thing is I loved it when simmons described all the diffrent alien worlds they visited on the river but him describing hanging air was kinda boring (like when he kept talking about all the mountains and shit). I would love to see simmons do a adventure story set in the modern day with that kind of detail thogh.

Some of the alien stuff was all right. I also enjoyed the priest dude getting melted every time he zoomed around, although it was a bit edgy. I thought the floating sex was pretty cringey, yep. And the self-cucking. Self-cucking through time travel is a somewhat amusing idea, in that you might think of it and let out an amused little "heh". But it shouldn't be a major plot element of a book. The Frank Lloyd Wright dick-sucking was also excessive and very cringe. And the "love is a badass fundamental force" ending was really cringe-tastic. Cringe cringe cringe! Chinaworld was boring as fuck although I like the ziplines.

>Even more jarring is Simmons' bizarre, sometimes overtly offensive dialogue. One Asian character actually says "Ah, so," and an African-American prisoner named Delroy Nigger Brown punctuates his speech with repeated phrases like "You know what I'm sayin' " and "You know what I'm tellin' you.' " In one strikingly tone-deaf moment, the lapsed-liberal professor Fox condemns politicians of the past (the book's past, our present) who weren't sufficiently pro-Israel: "I wish those presidents and senators and representatives had been hanged from lampposts all over Washington."

Wait, Dan Simmons hates Greta Thunberg? That's curious because if you'll ignore all the Keats and Chaucer meta, the plots of his books are the following:

Hyperion: local Hillary Clinton uses the AI threat and destroys the efficient interplanetary travel system. Humanity is fractured and billions are killed. Literally ongoing now, just not with AI, but with Corona (because Greta plane hate was not enough).
Endymion: there is a device which gives you immortality, but leads to memory decline. Catholic church manages to upgrade it and get rid of the bad effects. An entity literally called Void dislikes that people are immortal and sends void loli Greta Thunberg to destroy it. She spends two books running from the church roadrunner-style, but then surrenders and evil church kills her in an evil way. The scene of the killing is broadcast to all the universe. People get ashamed about Aenea... pardon, Greta sufferings, stop using the device and continue dying. Void is pleased.

Looks I was wrong about Simmons views. Were his MCs designated villains and the story a cautionary tale?

>or condensed:
nothing having to do with hyperion, the overarching 'plot' or the motivations
>just the fact you got a few strange sufferants together telling stories as they travel through an alien world with an unknown fate waiting for them that's actually probably a gruesome death

book would have been perfect if it dropped all the plot bullshit, and left you wondering why these idiots are all here and what's going on, and ended with no context save that they reached their goal and each received a brand of 'judgement' by the shrike. but that's probably just me. the same goes for books of the new sun. i don't like le epic overstory giving context to strange and fantastical worlds. save that shit for generic fantasy.

that said about generic fantasy, i have a huge soft spot for pic related, and all the malazan books too. mostly deadhouse tho.
