The late vedas and upanishads tend to express pantheism and emanationism of various kinds. There are many kinds of Buddhism, but about a thousand years into it, Mahayana Buddhism elaborated a dualistic epistemological framework predicated on the critique of samsara as illusion. This persisted for centuries, and the religious culture and institutions (monasticism, asceticism) surrounding it became quite influential in India.

A Hindu subsect desiring to reject Buddhism, but unable to combat the pervasiveness of Mahayana idealism and its associated institutions outright by rejecting them, instead copycatted the whole system while claiming the original non-illusory state of reality was not the Buddhist goal but the Vedic pantheism. Other Hindus instantly said this was a dumb way to "resist" Buddhism, because you have in effect just turned Hinduism into Buddhism and called it a victory.

The vast majority of practicing Hindus still see Advaita as heresy. It mostly fell out of practice until it was revived by western occultists and highly westernized Indians around 1870 and it became intertwined with educated Hindu nationalism.

Modern day Advaita proponents are universally white LARPers or emigrants who want to "go back to their roots" but can only tolerate do a highly westernized, formalized version of their grandparents' religion. In response to the overwhelming consensus of scholars and native Hindus, who correctly warn them that Advaita is crypto-buddhism and its modern forms especially have been heavily influenced amd formalized by Helena Blavatsky's Theosophy, they get defensive and cherry pick quotes from the Upanishads to "prove" that one badly-translated passage sorta kinda says something that sounds like Advaita.

Meanwhile anyone who actually learns Sanskrit instantly realizes the Upanishads are not Advaita at all.

Many books have already been written about this. Any book on the religious history of India already covers it. Like I said, it's the standard view of all scholars and most Hindus.
