What was the name of a book that started with a man coming down from the mountains to have found a virus killed everyone. He starts a little colony because they have water from a reservoir, eventually a guy comes to town and gives everyone a sickness so they vote to kill him, then they eventually lose language and revert to a tribal society before the protagonist dies the tribe elder on a burning bridge?

I am working on a setting where the gods are all associated with various crystals, mainly kinds of quartz. The nature/fertility/love goddess getting Rose Quartz is obvious, but what about the other major deities, what kinds of quartz would mesh well with the other major divine archetypes, like a god of war or a god of the underworld, a sun and/or moon god, etc.? I can't think of any good types of quartz/crystal to associate with them. I was thinking that there'd be a total of five major gods, along with perhaps a few minor deities and a trickster/devil figure outside the main pantheon.

I was thinking of having the trickster be associated with obsidian, to reference his nature as an outsider, or maybe smokey quartz, what do you think? What would some good domains for him be besides "evil" or the underworld/death?

Also, I was thinking that maybe the nature goddess could have another domain, what would be a good match, war, stewardship over the dead not being punished for sinful lives, or something else?

I agree. However many authors fail to realize to write interesting characters that happen to be gay is the way to go in that regard. Too often they write characters that are gay, where being gay is the only real defining character trait they have.

>> No.14927523

>>14927471
that's not necessarily the problem in my opinion. My issue is lgbt characters who feel inauthentic. A character who's nothing but a collection of lgbt stereotypes can be fine. The real issue is characters who were only put in to be progressive. I put ender up there as a good example of a believable gay character, but in fact he's the opposite. he's not an authentic gay character, he's a forced straight character. He's literally exactly the same as the kid from Darling in the Franxx who cucked the fat kid: a self-insert by a closet-case homophobe who realized halfway through his sexuality leaked out, requiring a sudden zero-chemistry straight marriage just to say "no homo"

Don't want to come off as an incel or whatever the buzzword is these days, but I avoid female authors exactly because of this. Their works are so poorly written it baffles me when I constantly see them recommended. I remember pic related was getting shilled hard throughout various circles and after I put it down in disgust I tried to find why exactly some people loved it so much. To nobody's surprise it was because it was written by a female author and had a bunch of "progressive" shit in it. Nobody ever actually praised the characters or the plot. It's all so tiresome.

AtLA is Avatar the last airbender? You mean you're not trying to write anything complicated and you're still having trouble with it?

I feel you, writing is hard. I'm not having much luck or finding much inspiration these days - or i wasn't, until i found a friend of a friend who's a writefag as well and they offered to do some edits for me. I'm in a small town, and the advertised writers groups were all middle-aged women, often migrants. I'm not dissing that, but sci-fi isn't their wheelhouse. Finding a few people near you who write SFF can help, because while a lot of /lit/ means well, there's the remainder to contend with. Online communities don't do it for me in this case. Here we go, don't bother wearing out those clever fingers - you clearly need them to think with.

in·cest (ĭnsĕst)
n.
1. Sexual relations between persons who are so closely related that their marriage is illegal or forbidden by custom.
2. The crime of sexual relations with a person defined by statute as too closely related.

So, if we may assume that momcest is the act of having sex with one's own mother, it is a type of incest. This makes it a subset of incest, yes?

You said:
>Not just momcest but straight up actual incest.

Implying there is momcest which is not:
>straight up actual incest.

I am curious now as to which part of the set that comprises momcest exists outside the set that defines incest. I would have thought momcest was entirely within it.

to be fair, AtLA's not complicated plot-wise but it's a masterpiece when it comes to character development and fight scenes. I'm too autistic to really do the former well. The latter I used to be able to do, but like everything else in writing I've only gotten worse at it over time and no, that's not my standards going up. I've read my old work and it's better than the shit I'm vomiting out now. My current stuff is honestly repulsive both in terms of quality and in how it reflects my own failures

You might be right about the friends, but I wouldn't know. I actually formed a small writing group with my friends, but they haven't wanted to do the writing group since the coronavirus hit, even virtually, and I'm thinking I might just give that up. It depends really.
Do I think that 'I', one man, could will something into existence? No, I am only one man, and I have no power within the universe to control such magic.
Do I think that people, in general, could will something into existence? Sure, with enough Tibetan magic, a large group of people could 'will' a Tulpa into existence.

The problem with Tulpa's now is that they are near impossible to form due to the overall world population, and the connectivity of the world.
Back when there were say 500 million people in the world, we were spread thin all over the place, so a group of people could get together and will something into existence, basically by accident. A lot of people seem to consider the miracles of Jesus as a Tulpa, an example being him conjuring enough food to feed the 5000. A gathering of 5000 back then would've been a large enough gathering to just will something into existence without even knowing you had done anything.
Today though, it would require a mass effort from basically everyone in the world to come together and will something into existence, which will never happen. I do like to think that remote tribes that still live in the Amazon have enough power to conjure a Tulpa though.

Truly weird this, like I get that the daughter is the protagonist of the overall series but she's a minor character here mainly because she's too young to do anything, in one "part" of the book she only has a tiny section just to remind the reader she's there.
It's especially odd because the books have a bit of a marketing push and a weird release gimmick (whole quartet out in 4 months, 1 book released a month) so you'd think they'd bother to sell their product properly.
Also all the comparisons they used to plug it are off too, it's about political intrigue and war and the blurb compares it to fucking Uprooted lol.

Hey, in a lot of fantasy settings, vampirism, lycanthropy, and similar states of beings are depicted as basically viral curses. If that's the case in your setting, did you have a historical "patient zero", the first person to "contract" the curse and start infecting others with it, or did the condition arise separately on multiple occasions, which could accounts for different independent variations/"strains", like with Prometheans? Is there any way to "vaccinate" someone against the curses, or even cure them? What about having both curses at once?

On a similar note, if vampirism is infectious in your setting, what keeps vampire numbers from growing exponentially? I've always liked the idea that you have to be fed vampire blood instead of just needing to be bitten, or something similar. Also, are vampires "alive" enough to have children normally?

GURM isn't that deep or complex. I say this as someone who enjoyed books 1-3 and get why they're popular. His characters are well rounded which is a cut above usual in sff but that doesn't make them deep. He has a lot of characters but that in itself isn't complexity because it basically boils down to which side of the warring factions they're on or if they're simply acting selfishly.

Hey guys I'm kind of new to the SFFG. I'm really picky with what I read and I don't read much SFF any more. One of my favourite authors of all time is Philip K. Dick; but I haven't read a PKD book in a few years. I've read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?; UBIK; A Scanner Darkly; The Man in the High Castle; The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch; Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said; Dr. Bloodmoney; We Can Build You; Minority Report. I couldn't get into Martian Time-slip, VALIS, Galactic Pot-healer (although I like the premise and would like to read the whole thing sometime soon), The Simulacra. I especially enjoyed A Scanner Darkly; The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch; Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said; Dr. Bloodmoney; and We Can Build You.
I really want to get deep back into SFF. I want to get kind of into a geeky mood for this kind of stuff to alleivate stress, but I'm picky so I haven't read all the classics in SFF, (I've read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings of course), so I just started The Culture series by Iain M. Banks since I thought the premise sounded interesting. I'm going to be doing a lot of reading in the forseeable future. After I'm done the Culture series I'll probably read The Prydain Chronicles and Inheritance Cycle. Can anybody suggest anything really, really good? I'm not really into The Book of the New Sun.

Only partially correct, the entire world is indeed a dream but the dreamer currently is the ancient-pre aedra/daedra god Anu, who achieved Amaranth (basically the end stage of CHIM) and became the new Godhead.
The Dwemer much later on basically wanted to become the godhead and create a new dream, and their method of doing this was building the Numidium, unfortunately for them the Numidium turned out to be an extremely autistic atheist god who would REEEEE at the universe so hard anytime it was turned on that it would literally break time and "no" something out of existence, thus erasing the Dwemer.

The rumors are the while Kirkbride was writing all this shit he locked himself in a hotel room for a week with a shitton of drug. The hotel part was actually true but the drugs are the rumor, some people say it was cocaine, others say it was just alcohol, no one really knows.

So I've just finished the first two books of the Nevernight trilogy by Jay Kristoff (or at least I assume it's a trilogy at this point, Senlin Ascends got me with the same trick). The first book was entertaining enough but it was still schlock, sure enough, but good lord, I have never had as many conflicting emotions about a book as I have about the second one, Godsgrave. There are so many things I took issue with and so many things I enjoyed.

First off, I found it absolutely unbe-fucking-lievable that Mia would end up falling for Ashlinn of all people when it's already been established that basically her only reason for existence is revenge. I haven't had my suspension of disbelief challenged so hard by a book ever since I tried to read Seveneves and Neal Stephenson, that hack, tried to make me believe that the entire population of planet earth would a. be okay with asteroid ragnarok and not go fucking bananas and b. that the Powers That Be would actually TELL the entire population of planet earth about it. Christ. There is zero fucking chance that Mia and Ashlinn would end up together and I firmly believe that Kristoff has a lesbian fetish and was writing with his dick when he thought that one up. Oh, and, as a side note, I get that it's a trendy political thing now, but come the fuck on, there would not be this many lesbians in Fantasy Rome.

Meanwhile Mia continues to be the Maryest Sue there ever was and not only get to have several cakes and eat them too by not only killing the dudes, getting the girl, and saving all her gladiator friends with some absolute bullshit that she should not have gotten away with. Furian should have died way earlier but no, Mia has to eat him instead so she can be dark and mysterious. Oh, and Magistra being the bad guy? At least hint at it, fuck. Now, that being said, despite everything going her way, I do actually like Mia as a character, and I am going to read the third novel, although I do get the sinking feeling it's going to end up being similar to the reboot of Carmen Sandiego, and I felt like Mia separating with the Red Church so early in this book after she'd worked so hard in the first one to get there is ridiculous. Oh, and good lord, whenever I read the word 'gentlefriends' I felt like I was going to lose it.

That being said, this series is a pageturner and I am eager to see what sort of ridiculous bullshit Kristoff comes up with in book three. A definite guilty pleasure read. Another pleasant surprise is that Kristoff is actually a decent writer, as in, the actual construction, prose, etc, is good. Might not be a great plotter as he seems to adhere to the typical mass-market strategy of 'think of the most bullshit idea you can and then top it sequentially for the rest of the book, and make sure you end on a cliffhanger' but if you don't hate that sort of thing it's easy to look past it. There's a reason that type of book sells, after all. All that being said, I would recommend this series.

>>14947438
On a somewhat more positive note, before I started in on Nevernight, I sat down and reread the Mammoth Book of Extreme Science Fiction, edited by Mike Ashley, and christ, I cannot recommend that book enough. I think there were maybe two stories there that I disliked? Some of the more abstract stuff is a little meh, particularly the second-to-last story, but the rest are really nice if you're into SF. Note that it says 'extreme' not 'hard' so don't go in expecting the one and not the other. Mammoth is also an apt description, there are a lot of stories in this anthology and it'll keep you occupied for quite a while. I grabbed it off of gen.lib so it's easy to access as well. Seriously, if you like SF short stories at all, I'd almost consider this mandatory reading.
