The Planet Killers - Robert Silverberg (1959)
A computer governs all decisions on Earth and has determined that in 67 years planet Lurion will destroy Earth. Lurion must be destroyed first. This will kill over 3 billion people, including 1000s of humans, but the computer always makes the best decisions. Roy Gardner is chosen to lead a team of 5 men to carry out the planetary genocide. He would rather not, but the computer is all-knowing.
Their security is based upon breathprints.
Roy watches a local performance, depicted on the cover, though described as nude in the text. The dancers are insensate and the audience falls into an empathic trance. The dance is set to a rhythmic beat, musical accompaniment, and colored spotlights.
"A knife flashed in the red spotlight...red line of blood traced itself down...the male dancer...the male dancer had a knife too...a line of blood appeared between the girl's breasts...the girl's knife slit the man's arm from elbow to shoulder...both were crisscrossed with slashes...attempt to make the delivery and placing of the wound as artistic as possible...the girl came forward, knife held high, preparing now for the final moment, the climax, the moment of truth-"
Then there's a police raid because they enjoy doing so.
Sociopathy is the Lurion norm.
Two young boys fail to mug Roy and as a result, "the tall one thrust the knife into his companion's belly and ripped upward with a killer's practiced hand."
Killing is the typical solution to most everything.
Enter Lori, the love interest, "five-seven at least...hair dyed green...open wide-eyed face...very attractive...well dressed...middle or perhaps late twenties...no rings on her fingers...lightly sprinkled with freckles"
Later he meets with a Lurion group who want to reform the planet.
Roy takes Lori, who studies sadism in Lurion entertainment, to see the dancers. She loves it. This time the two male dancers kill the female dancer. Lori mutters "Sexual symbolism?" Roy finds Lori's composure admirable and Lori is aroused by his consideration.
"Lori insisted on paying her share...acknowledging...not getting full measure from her."
"display of cleavage, dab of perfume...calculated to force him to...commitment"
Roy tells her that he's married, a lie, and that they ought to never see each other again.
Lori returns and proves that he isn't married.
Roy, distressed at the mounting problems and now doubting the omniscience of the computer, tells Lori everything.
Roy has to decide whether to abandon everything he's ever known and swore to protect in preference to a people that he detests.
He returns to Earth with Lori and tells the government that there's still hope for Lurion. They both give up everything and flee to a distant world, getting married along the way.
Years later one of the five finds him and asks him to lead the team assisting the reformists. He accepts.

Rating: 2/5
Aside from the dances, little else was particularly interesting. Unfortunate.

Lest We Forget Thee, Earth (1958)
This is a fix-up. It's three stories edited into one story. I dislike this practice.
100,000 years ago Earth was at the peak of its empire which spanned a myriad of galaxies, but was eventually reduced to almost nothing by those it once ruled.
Although there's a lot that questionable at best, it seems human resistance ended 30,000 years ago.
Hallam Navarre is an advisor to the planetary leader, which is a traditional position for humans. How do you know you're looking at a human? Because all humans shave their heads! Various non-human races are described in some detail.
He tells the leader that he will find the Chalice of Death or Life, whichever really they say both, that will give the leader eternal life, but is just something he basically made up on the spot. I assume it's meant to be the Holy Grail. So he's sent out to find it. He decides to best place to look would be the mythical home world of humanity, Earth, assuming it ever existed. Why there? Because the plot requires it. Along the way he meets a female advisor to a planetary and she is basically the love interest, more or less. They find a 13,000 year old physical book. That's some great preservation there, although I don't know why wouldn't be digitized, but so went the times. The book gives them a hint of where to go.
So they travel more than a billion light years in a week. Yes, that's correct. I was going to put it in all caps, but it's rather understated, so I left it as understated as well. Sol is now called Dubihsar and Earth is Velidoon. Upon arrival they find primitive humans of questionable genetic viability who lead them to 10,000 humans in cryostasis from 30,000 years ago. Clearly the non-humans did a terrible job in their war against humanity. They didn't even destroy Earth, let alone search it. The current inhabitants of Earth are never mentioned again. Naturally many of them decide it's time for a Second Empire and for humanity to conquer the universe once more. Navarre says "No." and that's that. This covers 33% of the novella. The rest of the novella is trying to create a fake military to intimidate everyone else into leaving them alone. Does it work? Of course it does.

The only bit I liked:
"We'll miss you here," Antrok said.
Navarre shrugged. "Thanks. But you know it's not really true. You can manage without me. By the Cosmos, you have to manage without me! The day Earth finds that just one particular man is absolutely indispensable to its existence is the day you might as well crawl back into the Chalice and go back to sleep."

In other words:
"Thanks. But you know it's not really true. You can manage without a dedicated OP. The day /sffg/ finds that just one particular man is absolutely indispensable to its existence is the day you might as stop posting and never have the thread made again."

Rating: 1.5/5

This Is How You Lose the Time War - Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone
There's little reason to discuss the plot since it's about style over substance.
Two societies that want to control all of time and space are destined to an eternal stalemate. Red & Blue, the protagonists, are on opposing sides but begin communicating with each other and eventually become unable to stop doing so. It's unclear how old they are. They're quite possibly several 1000s of years old. The setting is the far, far, future, but since it's time traveling, it's really all over the place in time and location, though they're always on Earth. It's unclear how the time traveling works. There are many timelines and life is simply a matter of subjectively experiencing what has already occurred.
This is a romance with a science fiction background. I'd say it's 80% romance and 20% science fiction. This may be the closest to a romance novel that I'll read.
Half of it is love letter epistolary and the other half is how they find the love letters. Generally I dislike epistolary works.
Red & Blue are not so much star-crossed lovers as they are two desperate outcasts ravenous for the slightest bit of intimacy, in whatever form it may present itself, which they then extrapolate to an all-consuming obsession with each other. Despite their outpouring of confessions of eternal love for each other, I have doubts that's what it actually is. If you're expecting them to do anything more than than write letters to each to each other, you'll be disappointed. Physical intimacy is not included. I understand why that's the case. While it seems to be seen as a LGBT romance, I'd argue that's inaccurate as both protagonists are post-human, if even that, and can be whatever they want to be at any time.
It's unclear what the authors intended by by having both Red & Blue meddle with the lives of each other when they were young. I found it to be mildly unsettling, but I assume it was meant to be romantic. To me it was only was only a step removed from an adult traveling back to when their partner was like 6 years old and told them, "We're going to be lovers one day, so let me help you with your problems." That may be hyperbole, but it expresses shades of the sentiment I felt.

I didn't like the inclusion of the various pop culture references. It felt out of place and character. I suppose I just hate "fun" and it isn't my kind of humor.
Examples:
Hello, I'm Mackint-
Hush, Siri
Ontario sucks
Mad props
Your mission objective's in another castle.
Mood Indigo
there ain't no mountain high enough
I know Socrates, I served with Socrates, and you, senator
Everybody's building them big ships and boats.
...and so many more

Rating: 3/5
I was going to give this 2/5, but the last 25% brought forth a sufficient amount of feeling from me to barely bump it up to a 3. I can certainly understand why a large number of people, especially women, would give this an easy 5/5 and perhaps call it one of their favorite works ever.

You shouldn't base a character around one card but on several. You can give them a simple three card spread to give them a little shape or a more advanced one if you feel comfortable doing that.

I would advise you to go deeper than that though, even if it's just such a small step as using a Mantegna deck instead of the Rider-Waite one. There's tons of inspiration to find in the world of symbols and more esoteric texts, in more obscure myth and in mystic teachings.

Not finishing the last part of your ebin fantasy series is what all alpha writers do. Let someone else deal with that bullshit once you're dead. Beta authors plot out and plan a story and then deliver it, editing it down to precisely what's needed and nothing more, giving the reader a strong ending maybe even in the same book the story started in. Chad writers never plan, they write as much shit they can come up with and don't care if it goes anywhere or serves some purpose, if they get popular not even their editor can stop them from bloating one book into several, and then when you don't know how to tie it all together then you just stop writing.

I was being rather sarcastic, but it does fit in with the Chad archetype, not giving a fuck and doing great. Some authors write these meticulous pieces that are so well thought out and polished, very few of them, like Gene Wolfe, Jack Vance and Tolkien, ever get any recognition and larger readerships. Then you have people who just don't give a fuck, that throw together something in under a week or shove in filler about food when they can't think of anything else. They tend to write overly long series and they never finish them, with tons of shit that never goes anywhere. Or maybe it's just a big long slog towards some end that is never reached. Robert Jordan, Gurm, Rothfuss, Frank Herbert and so on. Moorcock is a hack too, but somehow he managed to finish the Elric series, because he has some talent in getting shit done.

If your intention is not to create some brilliant work but to make money and gain fame then the hack method is far superior. It's about quantity on all levels, more pages, more bloat, more viewpoints, more hooks, more crooks, more books, more plot points and so on. This is what gets you a contract and a spot on the fantasy best seller list.

I gave the first Black Company book about 200 pages before I gave up on it, which I attribute to the narration being rather boring. I understand that the events are being described by someone who's not a writer but I struggled to stay interested throughout the entire time. It doesn't help that I couldn't find any sympathetic characters or felt irritated by certain event being mentioned in the passing ("we battled for HOURS so close to death, then we battled even MORE even CLOSER to death").

What was I supposed to get out of all that?

>> No.14915368

>>14915120
That is exactly why I like fantasy. Or rather, I would, in theory. Most fantasy I've read has been rather disappointing and it feels like most modern fantasy authors' intent is to write Tolkien/DnD pastiches based on pop culture rather than actually alluding to ancient epics and nostalgic callbacks to pulp novels from the 1920s.

Tolkien included dwarves and elves because he was inspired by Northern European mythology, and wanted to create a sort of mythos for pre-Roman England. Modern fantasy writers include dwarves and elves because they are staples of the genre. This is why the pseuds that frequent this board like to separate fantasy from "literary fiction" and call it and sci-fi "genre fiction"

>> No.14915388

>>14915020
If we're talking good examples I'm more interested in explorations of history, myth and society than the stuff a lot of scifi, mystery and litfic explores. (I still read about as much scifi as fantasy I just stay away from the super hard stuff that tries to ape real science)

If we're talking genre trash it's a very easy genre for a writer to introduce a setting, a society and action into. With magic allowing pretty much any spin on it people want.
This is another area where scifi lacks a bit for me since so much of the modern pulpier side of it is just military scifi with like 75% of that just being ex-troops being nostalgic about their time in the armed forces. There's still a lot of fun to be had out there but you have to just look a little harder to find it.
(Hypothesis for another day: milscifi by civilians is consistently more interesting and fun than the stuff written by people touting their service time

Not that many sci-fi novels have bothered to do so, even less so they are now.

IMO Shieldmaidens didn't exist in any notable amount. Certainly there were women who fought (or people in women's bodies who fought, anyways) but it's mostly a myth by white people in the US to whitewash their ancestors into being mystical woke pagans who were egalitarian because it's super gauche to claim you have 2/183rd native heritage from a Cherokee princess (it's always a princess) these days. There's very little evidence in the historic record for it compared to how, eg, there's accounts of random Frankish noblewomen in Normandy fighting as knights during periods of internecine warfare, and I think most of it actually stems from Christian missionaries writing propaganda about how the savages make their women fight or whatever. What's there for the norse is mostly graves where a female body was buried with a sword and at that point it's a toss-up over if they were a landowner or noblewoman, what we would call trans, or a woman who actually got in fights professionally. (as much as somebody can be a professional in a pre-industrial period.

Not to say it doesn't make for good fiction but, it's mostly stupid white people appropriating my heritage. The Norse were assholes.

What does any of that have to do with what I said? Do you actually think everyone is going to be content sitting at home with no job while their bills pile up and the economy craters, while there's no demonstrable reason for them to do so?
