His writing is a fossil from a time when people still had souls. The average human nowadays is exposed to so much simulated violence and despair they are completely desensitized and unable to respond to experience in any meaningful way. It's sweet and sad to remember when people were still so open and genuine that there was an actual danger they might go mad if the underlying reality of the world was revealed to be false and they were exposed to something too novel to process.

Final Dungeon is difficult and forces you to carry your best units. Once half hp, Boss has an attack that demands you kill some of your heroes until 2 remains
Due to permadeth, it pisses people off.

Their solution was to bring Leper (high damage, low acc) or a Jester (has massive boss killer skill that debuffs hard on next turn) and endlessly buff them with herbs from the Antiquarian and Witch doctor until the buff was so high they 1 hits the boss and you keep your heroes

Then came the Farmstead DLC which now introduces fucking space meth.

The Heart of the Abyss became an instant laughing stock. The final stage is literal walk in the park if you like drugs

I read Call of Cthulhu and Shadow over Innsmouth this weekend and it was as bad as the memes say.

Although it has never been adapted to the screen, on the other hand the 'mysterious deaths in the snow" type of story has been rehashed a million times in cinema so reading it today would be less effective than say 15 years ago when I read it. It really blew me away. The suspense is amazing. Still recommended. Truly a classic

The reason why Cosmic Horror is so unique is not because of the inclusion of aliens and the blatant racism, no. What makes it unique is the fact that Lovecraft blessed us with an entirely new thing to fear

If you haven't noticed: the horror genre always have only 2 subjects for instilling fright. Namely the fear of the unknown, and fear of harm/death. This are fears inherent to every sentient creature. However, the entire essence of Cosmic Horror lies on the fear that is completely inherent to sapient creatures...and that is the Fear of the Truth.

As sapient beings, we are capable of reason and thought that is beyond just the desire to survive. We have learned to desire being adored, respected, and to be immortalized in an everlasting legacy. Tales were told, monuments were built, and studies were recorded for such great men whom we all aspire to be.

But what if all it are nothing more than a passing folly in the wind?

Such is the essence of the Cosmic Horror. It aims to instill our fear of the realization that we, along with all of civilization, are all but just a little flicker in the cosmos that would leave no mark. The Old Gods, the Elder Ones, The Great Old Ones, etc...they are not real creatures. They are metaphors for our inherent fear of finding someone who can just trample about our greatest and proudest achievements.

The madness that is so inherent in Lovecrafts works does not drive anyone to insanity by forbidden knowledge, they fell because they came upon the Truth that hides in plain sight: We are Nothing. The hopelessness, the paranoia, and the ever extending clutch of madness are all just the fruits that bloomed from the existential dread that fall upon the ones who was robbed of their ego.

If you believe that you hold power, authority, respect, adoration, and importance, then you are going be easy prey for the Cosmic Horrors whom Lovecraft breathed life for the sole purpose of humbling the proud

And do not even try to say I'm wrong for this is what Lovecraft wrote at Weird Tales when he condemned their washed up cliches.

"There is only a passing horror in sordid, sanguinary gruesomeness—in bloody axe murders and sadistic morbidities. What really moves the profoundest springs of human fear and unholy fascination is something which suggests black infinite vistas of cryptic, brooding, half-inscrutable monstrosities for ever lurking behind nature and as capable of being manifested again as in the case treated"
