I would advise against writing satire, irony and deconstruction, it's basically an admission that you can't produce the real thing and it lacks authenticity. That's not to say you won't write something funny, you can, but wouldn't it be much more of an accomplishment to take that framework and make people care about the story you're telling with it? To make them root for the hero and take his struggle seriously? To not half-ass it because the entire thing is a joke to you? If you're a very funny guy then it might be fine, but in most cases I've seen that has been an excuse for impotence. I'm not really writing X so it doesn't matter if the story and characters are bad, it's a joke bruh, and jokes takes no effort. Of course if you actually put in the effort and treat your writing sincerity then you don't have the shield of irony or comedy anymore, it might be terrible and that might hurt your ego.

I do read a lot, it's just that most of it is old stuff. I honestly have no clue what current year fantasy books are about because they seem so unappealing to me I never bothered with them. I do know however that most of the bigger releases that are talked about here such as that /tg/ series of books, Malazan, and the like still have a lot of the Tolkien copycat tradition still going. If you would actually say what they are about and how they have advanced then that would be illuminating. Frankly I think many people are too stuck in that mire to see the fields beyond it. It's not just the fantasy races but the forms and style, how stories are constructed.

Modern authors are much more likely to spend a career writing not just one genre but one character. Well, that's an evolution of the way Tolkien built a mythopoetic second world instead of the more traditional approach which was either embedded in a culture and mythos where this wasn't necessary or simply let the imagination loose without bothering with much worldbuilding or anything like that. Burroughs wrote a lot of Tarzan and Barsoom stories, but each one was a complete and self-contained, it was the opposite of binge material. The characters and setting was pretty much just a vehicle to tell stories.

Modern books seems to be written like TV shows more than anything else, with endless storylines and filler. And while the legacy of Tolkien is still present they lack so many of the qualities which made him such a good writer. There is no purpose or meaning to their crafted universes, nor to the length of it all.

That's my take on it anyway, I don't have the time to read these insane multitudes of doorstops.

Even Tolkien had a frame story for it, he's just abridging the Red Book for us. And you get so much more out of LotR if you know real-world history and literature (alliterative Rohan poetry!). But to a lot of his readers, especially later ones, it was just a completely separate world, which feels so natural it's bizarre to not find it before him. Same with plots where the fate of the entire world hangs in the balance, those are just not common in 1800s literature (War of the Worlds yes but that's in service to the themes and not anything the protagonist can affect anyway).

Everyone's been trying to recapture what made Tolkien special without understanding it at all and now we've got a cargo cult of a genre where we praise each other for especially well-made bamboo planes.

I'd recommend not doing that and writing a bunch of short stories first, even if they won't get published. That way you won't have to lose so much work when you fuck up in some way and you learn good structure and writing habits. If you have put in the work and can write decent short stories already then you should know how to write a novel, you just do the same thing but in longer form and with more of everything.

If you want a book on writing then I'd recommend Creating Short Fiction by Damon Knight, I've read quite a lot of them and it's the best book on the matter I've found. Its two hundred pages contains pretty much everything you could possibly learn from a book on writing. Damon Knight was an editor first and writer second, so he knows just about every way in which you probably will fuck up and gives advice accordingly.

As for when you begin to write your novel then planning with an outline, perseverance and then editing are key. You need to have an idea of the story which you are excited about enough that you will pull through and not drop the novel before its done, then when you have written it you need to revise your work to make it more cohesive and flow better. Remove the parts which are unnecessary and that makes the text flabby, rewrite what doesn't work and so on. You need to be pretty brutal with this stuff if you want it to be good.

Or, if you intend to sell it on the kindle store, if it is YA, or worse, if it's LitRPG or something, then take some advice from Moorcock and rush that sucker in under a week or so and don't revise it, just publish whatever you got at the end of your intense writing session. Here's a handy guide from the master of hacks himself: http://www.ghostwoods.com/2010/05/how-to-write-a-book-in-three-days-1210/ Don't waste too much of your time on something that is meant to be very low-brow disposable entertainment, it's pearls thrown to swine and they won't care your efforts. I suppose it depends on your taste, there's the respected Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser by Fritz Leiber and Clark Ashton Smith wrote some very good stories. As for Moorcock's Elric series that's fairly good but tries to invert many things about Robert E. Howard's stories for better or worse, speaking of which, there's also Kull of Atlantis.

I know it's not strictly sword and sorcery, but if you enjoyed Howard them you should check out the work of Edgar Rice Burroughs if you haven't already.

That's a classical motif and the easiest way to depict heroism in a single frame of art. The hero is fighting some kind of beast(s) and there's a damsel in distress. The degenerate ape creatures are lesser men and ugly malignant savages while the hero is of good breeding and the superior man in all regards.
