Recently got accepted to Harvard for next year. But the problem is that I can't stop listening to Hiphop and I'm convinced that the best possible thing to do with my life is make trap beats. I genuinely think it is the literature of our generation. Nobody reads anymore so it's sure as hell not actual books. Poetry is identity politics. Trap beats are pure aesthetic value. Am I wrong?

I think I want to take a gap year and spend it exclusively making trap beats on soundcloud.

I imagine the Greeks said the same thing about the poetry of Homer.

I'm at UPenn and am pretty miserable. So many students are either normies or chads, very few true humanities lovers. The philosophy program is ok but doesn't have many classes on continental philosophy.

Go to Harvard, OP. Pass your classes and make connections with students that share your interests. Join a music production club or similar. Use your connections to get recognized if that's what you really want. I still don't really know what I want to do but at least ivies provide the name-brand that makes you a lot more versatile to many employers.

Trap is ephemeral crap. Poetry of a generation? It’s barely the poetry of a decade. Actually, it’s not poetry at all. A Bantu interpolation on the soul of European man. You lack historical perspective. Plucked from the oceans of infinity (Brahman), you’ve stumbled into your small sliver of dazzling light, grasping and clutching at whatever you can lay your hands on. What is eternity to you? You’re still a child. Go to Harvard. Waltz with your forebears so that you might waltz with the eternal.

popular culture today is a market cornered by big industries (music, film, television). from a communist standpoint, contributing to a culture which has been defined by companies trying to sell you things is pretty questionable. the type of music lil peep made (rap, hip hop, whatever) is a type put into the cultural environment by these big companies. he's just buying into what these corporations/companies have determined for us, even if he's doing it "independently", he's just jumping on the trends given the OK by these companies. the whole schtick reeks of the instagram consumerist lifestyle.

Go to harvard and make beats while you're there. If like a free a year or two you're convinced your life goal is still music then just drop out.

Now you're the guy who quit harvard to focus on music, people will eat that shit up, while you do what you like.

If you stick with Harvard then you have a degree and connections to fuck loads of other shit. (no worries, you'll graduate, harvard inflates scores like mad if you do anything, it's just about getting in)

>> No.14783786

>>14783695
Popular culture is what shapes minds, though. A lot of what is now considered "classical" was once also popular and seen with disdain.
Once a form of art becomes too much of a "high art", it's only relegated to the circles of academia and intelligentsia. It loses connection to the real world, stops evolving, withers, and dies.
It's totally valid if you're going for purely aesthetic value, but if you want your art to leave impact on society, you have to take a hold of and subdue "popular" culture, use its medium against itself.
We're living in the perfect time to do this as well, when a wide variety of works and forms of art now have the widest reach, and all can serve as a gateway to something more.
Popular culture is not meaningless, it is a vivid reflection of our zeitgeist (whether created so conciously and subconsciously), so making your work appealing to the masses is not something inherently bad provided you play to your strengths and don't sacrifice your integrity in the process.

>Popular culture is what shapes minds, though. A lot of what is now considered "classical" was once also popular and seen with disdain.
Popular culture in the past wasn't monopolized by huge industries
>We're living in the perfect time to do this as well
no, it's the worst time because huge industries have a budget greater than any individual who wants to "buck trends" could ever hope to compete with. you will just get mogged by these industries
>Popular culture is not meaningless, it is a vivid reflection of our zeitgeist
nowadays the zeitgeist is determined by marketing executives. it isn't spontaneous anymore

>> No.14783873

>>14783800
What huge industries specifically?
There are big labels in music, but there are also enough actual Soundcloud artists and niche sub-genres, as well as plenty of one-person success stories.
There is literature, but anyone with a keyboard and an Internet collection can release whatever they want. You can even self-publish using various platforms if you're that way inclined.
You can work in AAA videogame industry, or you can release a one-man indie effort, either for free or not.
TV is basically dead. And while YouTube is a big corporate platform, it still gave rise to many new experiences and genres of video, which shows that 'big media creators' don't have that much stranglehold on a single person anymore, even if Youtube themselves are trying to trample over their roots and accomplishments nowadays.
The only notable exception I see is cinema, as it's still predominantly controlled by Hollywood and indie films are not nearly as big as they should be. Still, they are more accesible than they used to be. And with services like Criterion Collection many more people are now insterested in actual classical cinema than just mindlessly watching whatever Marvel's doing.

Yes, big budgets are a factor, but they won't carry a work if it's bad on its own (at least for long) and vice versa. The only place where they still actually matter is the marketing, but the Internet can help you with that without any huge budgets if you play your cards right.
Big companies coexist with smaller authors and creators, although the former did start to weaponize the latter format.
Still, while this era is not without its share of problems, it's a hell lot of an easier to reach a wider audience with fewer resources than it's ever been.
Even if the most you do is make a small dent and just create some new niche, it can still be a relatively large number of people you made an impact on.
