Basically Hegel thinks that ideas play off one another and synthesize into knowledge, bringing us ever closer to understanding. Hence, history progresses.

Ditto with Marx, only the struggle is a matter of class, bringing us ever closer to justice.

Kant posited that objects of possible experience must conform to categories of the understanding. Hegel thought it illegitimate that Kant just lifted those categories from Aristotle and presented them as set in stone. Sounds like most "Marxists" today are wrong then. Understanding Hegel is not necessary at all for a solid understanding of Marx, but no one needs some academic hack to tell them that. And Marx definitely doesn't need him to disconnect anything from anything. Still, I admire him for making a professional career out of doing useless shit that nobody needed, except for next generations of jerkoffs who have similar plans for their life.
