14730127 No.14730127 [Reply] [Original]

My life is over. I'm losing my vision. I've been told 2-3 years until 70>% vision loss. I'm in my late twenties and I'm too stupid and old to learn braille now. What the fuck. I'll never read any of my favourite books again. I'll never get to spend my nights laughing with you guys again. I'll have to move back in with my parents and I'll need help doing everything. Eventually I will just be living in complete darkness. What the actual fuck guys. This is worse than death I would prefer cancer than this seriously.

Im freaking the fuck out. It's a more aggressive type of retinitis pigmentosa. How is blindness based? Who wants to date a blind guy? How will I ever feel safe out in society? Everyone will know I'm blind and BANG punch out of nowhere nothing I can do to defend myself. Those guys lived in a different time. It's different now. People prey on the weak.

They always did but back in the day you'd get fucked much harder while now you have a decent chance that nothing bad will happen to you and motherfuckers will even try to help you. Plus again, all the tech.

Hey man, there are a lot of good options for visually impaired computer users these days. The free software community provides a lot of tools like the orca screen reader, and web design is going though a huge shift to work well with these tools. You should consider looking into this stuff and getting used to it now so that you'll be ready to go once it happens. I've not known many blind people, but I did point a family with a blind daughter at these tools and she took to it like a fish to water. I also recall reading a hacker news thread about blind developers, and there were (at least allegedly, but I'm pretty sure they were legitimate) mostly blind/totally blind software devs talking about how they used computers. Give me a few minutes to find it. It will take you longer to do computer tasks now but you're not locked out, and I'd imagine it will make you more meticulous and thoughtful. You not being blind yet is actually a huge advantage, and my best advice is to man up and start preparing right now.

Blindness is less isolating than deafness. If you’re blind you can still talk to people and hear their voice. If you are deaf you’re just that guy in the corner who can’t participate in the conversation, most people do not know sign language. Also blinds are traditionally seen as oracles and mystics, maybe there is some truth to that and you will get some insights into the spirit world.

You need to look at this in a different point of view. Now you will be forced to live an alternative life style. Being blind does not mean you will have a bad life. If you overcome your blindness by living a full life, you will probably be happier than most people. You will be able to find love as well.
Personally, if I were you I would dedicate a lot of your time to a passion of your choosing. Do you like music, poetry, literature?
Also, being in your late 20’s does not mean you are dumb and old. You should be at the peak of your mental health. And IF you aren’t then you need to focus on that as well. Good luck.

>> No.14733771

if it's any shred of consolation, there are already many possible senses that we as humans are deprived of experiencing (like sonar, echolocation, etc). Life is always about painting a whole with the limited senses you have.

And as far as /lit/, that's something you'll still have since language works mostly by sound. Reading is the wrong thing to focus on missing.

But anyway, I'm sure you can learn braile. And there are audiobooks and all sorts of accessibility things nowadays.
I work with programming and I've had a blind coworker who is pretty good. He codes while using a screenreader and when looking at him doing it it looks crazy for me and seems like the sort of thing that I would never be able to do, but according to him he thought that at first as well.
We are actually pretty good at adapting and learning new things, specially when forced to.

> Who wants to date a blind guy?

A little bit of research and I found out that Vitamin A supplementation and a diet high in omega 3 fatty acids (which you can also supplement) slowed vision loss.

This study found goji berries slowed vision loss.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/30877066/

Many studies seem to be talking about Lutein which is a supplement you can buy.

Google scholar is a good place to look for studies. I say you have nothing to lose by dosing yourself with Omega 3 fatty acids, Lutein, and Vitamin palmitate. Delaying the vision loss for something like improved gene editing technologies or bionic technology could be really important.

Start trying to look up clinical trials and experimental treatments especially ones in non-western countries with limited medical regulation.

“BVA was also concurrently developing the High-Acuity device, which incorporated a number of new technologies to bring together a microchip and an implant with 1024 electrodes. The device aimed to provide functional central vision to assist with tasks such as face recognition and reading large print. This high-acuity implant would be inserted epiretinally. Patient tests were planned for this device in 2014 once preclinical testing had been completed, it is unknown whether these trials ever took place.

Patients with retinitis pigmentosa were to be the first to participate in the studies, followed by age-related macular degeneration. Each prototype consisted of a camera, attached to a pair of glasses which sent the signal to the implanted microchip, where it was converted into electrical impulses to stimulate the remaining healthy neurons in the retina. This information was then passed on to the optic nerve and the vision processing centres of the brain.

On January 2, 2019, BVT released positive results from a set of trials on four Australians using a new version of the device. Older versions of the device were only designed to be used temporarily, but the new design allowed the technology to be used constantly, and for the first time outside the lab, even to be taken home. More implants are to be administered throughout 2019.

According to Fact sheets dated March, 2019, on BVT's website, they expect the device to obtain market approval in 3 to 5 years.“
