I studied economics (master's degree, I don't really know the equivalent for the US), this is basically the lists of the best books in economics recommended to me by my teachers in undergrad/bachelor (where I live you don't have to read specific or even any textbooks so the teachers can really recommend you what they really think is best). I read them all and quite enjoyed them. Plus you don't really have to trust me, these are quite well known and generally well regarded textbooks. Mankiw and Varian are really a standard for serious beginners.

I've read my fair share of gothic. The must read are: The Castle of Otranto, pretty much all of Radcliffe's novels, The Monk, Frankenstein, Dracula, The Phantom of the Opera and Melmoth the Wanderer, Vathek.
lesser-known books: The Mysterious Warning: A German Tale, The Midnight Bell: A German Story, Founded on Incidents in Real Life, The Castle of Wolfenbach.
Northanger Abbey is the culmination of gothic fiction because is a parody. I think her intentions were to kill the genre by showing her readers that real life was more scary than a haunted gothic castle.
There are several interesting books on gothic: The History of Gothic Publishing, 1800-1835 (Franz J. Potter), Victorian Gothic (Ruth Robbins and Julian Wolfreys), Gothic Writing 1750-1820: A genealogy (by a guy called Miles something).
If you can on Amazon you will find some gothic anthologies released by Wordsworth Editions, the price is around 3 usd. I bought them all on Amazon Japan.

Anyone have the Deep Ecology or eco fascist charts?

>> No.14689919

>>14689755
"Eco facism" doesn't make sense, because you can't have a fascistic state while also truly moving towards deep ecology. You can of course have eco-traditionalism, but fascism requires a technological system that is fundamentally contrary to deep ecology.

>> No.14689962

Any other Japanese /lit/ charts?

>> No.14689970

>>14689962
Not technology - technological society. The industrial technological system is fundamentally incompatible with a deep-ecological mode of living, however fascism requires and propogates a technological industrial system.
Read Industrial Society and it's Future or some other books by Uncle Ted.

>> No.14689986

>>14689970
I don't think that's a correct definition for ecology.

Ecology deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings. Technology is part of our physical surroundings, and it seems that fascism is at least a part of our nature. Are you construing naturalism with "deep-ecology"?

I'll give ol' Ted a read one of these days, from what I've heard though, his solutions to these problems seem rather naive.

>> No.14690025

>>14689986
I'll concede that Ted's "solutions" weren't that great, but mostly because he was naive about the feasibility of a revolution and how that could be enacted. However his diagnosis is spot on.
What you'll find is that many of the issues that are stopping people from properly relating to themselves and their surrounding is the psychological effects that the technological system has on individuals and on society. That's part of Ted's main thesis.
I think you are seeing "fascism" as something fundamentally different from it's reality. It sounds like you want something of a traditionalist society, with traditional modes of interpersonal relations and societal structure. Fascism did aim to create this *kind of* but aimed to do so from the top down with a totalitarian and technological state mode of enforcement, which was never going to work. Traditional modes of society need to be built from the bottom up, from the individual and the community.

>> No.14690054

Sorry, I couldn't find it either.

But wouldn't the strongest cro-magnon with the most allies and most weapons become the leader of his group by force? I'm not saying that would occur every time, but because it is a known behaviour we've always had then isn't it a natural one? I don't see why fascism, in that case, should be considered something alien from ecology. If domination is a natural human desire, possibly need, then how can we subscribe to a deep-ecology without it?

>> No.14690064

>> No.14690092

>>14690055
It's not domination, it's a system of state control that completely limits the freedom of it's population in order to create the outcomes it desires, whereas a truly traditional society needs no state enforcement to get people to act in a positive way, because people *want* to act in that way, through no strict social regime or fear of the state. "Domination" might be natural on a small scale - say as a tribe leader rules over his clan, but their power also comes from their wisdom as elders and as spiritual guides. You are forgetting that the caste above the warriors is always the spiritual guides and elders, guardians of knowledge and wisdom. Domination from a state scale is not natural at all, by any stretch of the imagination.

Then why is it a recurrent behavior? People abusing power seems like the most natural thing ever.

But doesn't the fact that we're naturally driven to create these technologies factor in? It would be unnatural if we became luddites to prevent fascism, it's far more likely that we'd produce better technologies to combat them.

>> No.14690160

>>14690150
Where then is the limit of what is "natural"
Is our current situation not therefore natural?
If you read Kaczynski you'll see how the problems are inherent to the technological system, and new technology is only going to make things worse and deepen the issues. Technology only serves the technological system. And ultimately, it will no longer be able to sustain itself under the social pressure of all the issues it has created, and there will be a collapse.
The best option, in my opinion, is to leave the technological system before such a collapse happens and you're caught in the rubble. Ted's idea was that there must be a revolution against the technological system, but I don't think that is actionable personally.

Oh, I agree that these technologies are bad for the short term of our species and probably destructive in the long term. I just think it's silly when people claim that forbidding the development of these technologies and abandoning them is the natural thing to do. Our entire consciousness is a struggle between naturalism and our pursuit of unintuitive understanding. Our self-awareness causes us deep sadness, our success in leaving our paleolithic lives was evolutionarily bad for our mental health, so why should our success in science and our proximity to its fruits be any different? To me, it feels deeply unnatural to swear off that curiosity for the sake of caution, we've never done that before. I agree with your worries and sentiments, but people that make an argument that technology isn't natural to us have a misunderstanding of the desires of human nature.

Idk, it may have something to do with their concept of "kami" (are the spirits, phenomena or "holy powers" that are venerated in the religion of Shinto. They can be elements of the landscape, forces of nature, as well as beings and the qualities that these beings express; they can also be the spirits of venerated dead persons) which makes their horror strange, different and uncanny compared to our western horror. I hate you retards, fascism was invented by Giovanni Gentile and Benito Mussolini and wasn't initially racialist. Hitler based himself heavily on fascism but added the racialist aspect. Then Mussolini added that element when it became the ISR (Italian Socialist Republic). Other third positionist parties used this later version of racialism but differed on their opinion of jews... Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists downplayed them as just another group of wealthy cosmopolitan millionaires... whereas Corneliu Codreanu from the Iron Guard was so overtly anti-semitic that he'd make Hitler say "alright bro, calm your tits". It was an evolving ideology that was practically strangled in the crib.
