This. He literally writes Sun and Steel under the pretense of wanting to get shredded to bridge the gap between words and body, but the real reason was he was an insecure manlet and did it to compensate.

Noone understands Mishima because they politicise him too much, both leftists that hate him or rightists that read Sun and Steel once. Mishima was above all a voyeur. Almost all of his books are about the pleasure in seeing without doing. Stillness and detachment, not the effeminacy that scholar or the samurai aesthetic rightists attach to him.

>> No.14490980

>>14490967
Almost every one of his books culminates in an act of violence and self-sacrifice for the sake of attempting to bridge the gap between detachment and action. Mishima was a nationalist and this enlightened centrist take isn't doing anything for anyone.

>Almost all of his books are about the pleasure in seeing without doing.

>Let the reader not chide me for comparing my own trade to the white ant. In its essence, any art that relies on words makes use of their ability to eat away—of their corrosive function—just as etching depends on the corrosive power of nitric acid. Yet the simile is not accurate enough; for the copper and the nitric acid used in etching are on a par with each other, both being extracted from nature, while the relation of words to reality is not that of the acid to the plate.

>Words are a medium that reduces reality to abstraction for transmission to our reason, and in their power to corrode reality inevitably lurks the danger that the words themselves will be corroded too. It might be more appropriate, in fact, to liken their action to that of excess stomach fluids that digest and gradually eat away the stomach itself. Many people will express disbelief that such a process could already be at work in a person’s earliest years. But that, beyond doubt, is what happened to me personally, thereby laying the ground for two contradictory tendencies within myself. One was the determination to press ahead loyally with the corrosive function of words, and to make that my life’s work. The other was the desire to encounter reality in some field where words should play no part at all.

If you examine Mishima’s politics without reference to his artistry it’s totally nonsensical. He proposed Japan disband it’s army and voluntarily invite the UN peacekeeping forces to replace them, the idea being Japan’s sovereignty would be defended by a force of nuclear-tipped kamikaze fighter planes- see, totally nuts.

Things become more comprehensible when you view his revolutionary conservatism as an extension of the libidinal concerns in his writing. Namely, that contemporary sexuality is a catastrophe which can only be resolved through death. War and military chauvinism become the outlet for a society where orgasm is eternally deferred.

That’s why he launched his coup. Though Mishima knew he would never succeed in transforming Japanese society it rather provided the correct staging for him to perform his own death.

>hated by everyone in history
Really goes to show you the workings of motivated reasoning. You know the historical reasons so many Jews were found in Poland? They were invited there and esteemed for their skills. Anyway, I think there is a strong correlation to Judaism and being hated in several points in history. But not for the stupid ass reasons you probably attribute the effective cause to. The reasoning is largely related to their being permitted to commit ursury, which was really just loaning in general, not just loansharking, at least from the first milennia onwards. That's a solid material condition that shows repeated antagonism. Additionally, the orthodox have always been highly insular, which you can't always blame them for, but it's not much different from the muslims today that insist on living in close proximity and having their way in certain areas. These are CULTURAL issues though, but I'm sure you have some long winded explanation of how its related to their race, genetics, etc.

this isnt twitter retard. there are no instances of self sacrifice in mishima. not a single one. the only book where you can kind of see this is runaway horses, but if you genuinely believed isao did what he did out of patriotism, you need to reread. on the other hand most of mishimas novels have voyeurism as a central aspect: sailor, golden pavilion, sea of fertility, forbidden colours, etc.

>>14491010
yes, mishima was smart enough to recognise this contradiction within himself. you are wrong however to suggest a kinship between seeing, stillness and words. the world of words is different from the world of stillness. there can be no peace as long as there is language. mishima was always conflicted between his provincial, samurai ancestry— the world of action and deed, and his actual, cosmopolitan, foppish self. he lived in tokyo and acted in films. this is the world of the courtly life of kyoto and tokyo. think sound of waves vs after the banquet. the tension between these two worlds in mishima (and we may find ourselves therein) birthed his voyeurism. stuck between two contradictory worlds, never truly belonging to either. he had a strong will acting upon a weak character (thats all of us autists isnt it?) and out of that total detachment from sanity (for lack of a better word. i use it because most people fit cleanly into one or the other without much self reflection).

the sea of fertility encapsulates all of mishima. it begins with spring snow, with the courtly life of letters, and followed by runaway horses, of deed and purity. the temple of dawn shows the degenerate side of mishima's voyeurism (remeber honda is his self insert more or less) with the peeping tom bit on ying chan. the final book is the most important to understand mishima, as it is the only book in the tetralogy where mishima truly identifies with both protagonists. mishima is at once honda the humiliated voyeur and toru the adamantine voyeur.

>> No.14491577

>>14491406
Absolutely there is a sense of voyeurism, looking but not possessing, but thats about the only thing you're saying that is correct. His short stories especially involve principled suicide.
