Why does art need to have a definition at all? If art is defined such that "anything can be art" then it has no meaning and only aesthetic value can have meaning. Not everything has aesthetic value, yet you can have art which has no aesthetic value.

Why is art anything but a completely arbitrary definition? Its definition doesn't come from a functional purpose, so why?
