>book forum with 17 million members is populated entirely by people who admit to preferring video games and anime over reading and only read four or five books a year

The absolute state of literature, completely dead medium.

all these things are nothing to me:
>what reddit says or thinks
>what OP says or thinks
>whether people prefer one medium of entertainment over another
>how many people prefer one medium of entertainment over another
>the popularity of literature

r*dd*t*rs just sub to a bunch of wishful /rs to be pseudy. oh yeahahhhhh i sub to /r/ books because i aspire to actually read a book one day, please let everyone think i am smart. it's the same as guys who buy a bunch of normalfag-highbrow (IE midwit) books to put on a shelf and never touch, but then they read the wikipedia page so they know just enough to seem like they read the book if anyone asks. that's how normalfaggot minds work.

they ARE npcs.

anyone who has spent more than five minutes on r/books can tell most posters don't read beyond a handful of shitty YA bestsellers.

I wish that instead of bashing the low-hanging-fruit, as if 4channers are any less guilty of what Redditor's admit, we would seriously discuss overstimulation, our ever shortening attention span, and what we can do to ameliorate it.

Why do people prefer other mediums?

I think one reason is that people often don't know their own preferences, are are not encouraged to develop it. I spent all weekend reading through a 500 page book because it captured me. I pulled it out of the amazon delivery box and started reading it, and now I've read through most of it. I think too many people get obsessed with books they 'should' read rather than developing a personal taste.

It has been pretty consistent throughout history that almost nobody reads. This is nothing new.
