Exactly! Why do you think Gene Wolfe split up BOTNS into two books (and stopped at 400 pages on the first one) and then wrote it so there’s a new chapter every 5 pages? Books should not be more than 400 pages. OP is right

400-500 pages means one week of reading. It's pretty comfy. Anything that's 100-200 pages is kinda gay cause you can just read it in one day if you flex a little, and that's not really reading a book but rather a magazine. 300 is more acceptable cause I can stretch it to a working week and then read a real book in the weekend. I generally like it around 700 because you really bond with it through pain and joy. When you finish it you actually feel something unlike with the 100 pages twinks.

But literally how does one not subvocalize while reading? Am I defective?

>> No.14436047

>>14436043
Subvocalization, or silent speech, is the internal speech typically made when reading; it provides the sound of the word as it is read.[1][2] This is a natural process when reading, and it helps the mind to access meanings to comprehend and remember what is read, potentially reducing cognitive load.[3] This inner speech is characterized by minuscule movements in the larynx and other muscles involved in the articulation of speech. Most of these movements are undetectable (without the aid of machines) by the person who is reading.[3] It is one of the components of Baddeley and Hitch's phonological loop proposal which accounts for the storage of these types of information into short-term memory.[4]

>> No.14436161

>>14436043
You just have to train yourself to move on from the word as soon as you parse its meaning. For example, I could say and use for dramatic purposes two words,, making it easy to parse, that have many syllables, making it longer to vocalize the simple idea:
>premature ejaculation
It takes a lot longer to sub vocalize those 8 syllables than it is to glance at those two words without subvocalizing and still having a completely implicit, embedded understanding of what they are understood to mean.

>It takes a lot longer to sub vocalize those 8 syllables than it is to glance at those two words without subvocalizing and still having a completely implicit, embedded understanding of what they are understood
I feel like I still "retroactively" subvocalize things even after immediately parsing them and understanding the meaning.

it is a training requirement thing try apps like spreeder or just research speed reading. when I was working on my thesis I had to chew through giant journals regularly and learned to speed read without missing too much of the good stuff.
