14408609 No.14408609 [Reply] [Original]

Been reading articles about the death of (mostly nerd/geek) subcultures and wondering what good books there are on the life and death of subcultures, perhaps as a whole:

https://www.further.co.uk/blog/death-subculture-part-1-changing-role-subculture-21st-century-britain/
https://meaningness.com/geeks-mops-sociopaths
https://status451.com/2016/09/15/social-gentrification/
https://paulmullins.wordpress.com/2012/12/08/the-death-of-authenticity-and-the-outsider-consumption-and-hipsters/

(The articles on the geek subcultures dying have a slight bitterness to them that I can relate to, but I've never been part of the geek/culture subculture and only experienced it through the internet since I was practically the only geek at my school back in the 90s/00s. I only went to a con a few years ago, and it was kind of obvious that I was waaaaay too late OR maybe the image of geekdom I had in my head wasn't actually real or something.)

>Posted before but if bait is posted repeatedly, day in day out, on /lit/ why not post this up again for more suggestions? Someone told me it was capitalism's fault, that everything can be commodified no matter how niche.
>Especially after listening a bunch of teen to very early 20-something kids with N64 t-shirts praising Goldeneye despite the fact that it has aged like milk and is a product of it's time, and they wouldn't actually *know* why it was so fun in it's day

If there is anything more vapid and docile than mainstream popular culture, it is subculture. With all these fucking exasperating, superficial attempts to be "counter-culture" they only end up championing the worst aspects of modern culture

>> No.14409432

The internet killed every subculture I was involved in pre-internet. Mainly punk, hardcore, old video games, Psychedelic drug use.
I can't be sure it's a bad thing. Everything was either exposed as a LARP or a legitimate threat to the participants at the benefit of the few. Only old video games remains relatively unscathed, just the price or everything is absurd.
Punk and hardcore became more exploitable and the mystery was stripped away. Commercialized the underground. Drugs became less mysterious and more like a competition between psychonauts. It became clear drugs have no mystical answers to deliver us
But now we are left with reality, which in my life is miserable. The escapist subcultures were the only things getting me comfortably through the day

4chan, and general digital subcultures, declined once they began to enmesh with mainstream culture. With popularity came corporate influence, normalfags, social media and centralization. Now, the vanity and narcissism of the outside world infects every corner of the web. The digital landscape has also become creatively sterile. 4chan produces nothing interesting anymore.

One more thing on centralization and loss of creativity: Nowadays posts are constant references to content on normalfag media such as instagram, facebook, twatter, reddit. The content of those websites is garbage, so that garbage comes here to be eaten, shat out, and then eaten again.

The internet is shit. 4chan is also shit. moot says it best himself indirectly. https://www.forbes.com/sites/parmyolson/2012/12/18/4chans-moot-laments-the-death-of-internet-culture/

No they aren't you idiot. Subculture is a fraction within the dominant culture which expresses itself through consumerism and shallow superficiality like a specific appearance with zero to minimal tangible differences from mainstream culture in ways of thinking.
Subculture is incapable of achieving anything because it simply obsessively compares itself to mainstream culture and revels in juvenile rebellion instead of trying to look beyond the cultural hegemony

They're low effort, and a lot of retards from reddit copy them, since 4chan saw a massive wave of retards from /r_thedonald.
