Why would you make a thread derived from reddit? It's the fucking unfunniest faggot site. It's spread made 4chan much worse than it was. It makes Beta males IRL spout off circle jerk approved vaginal dogshit. I had some kid working for me who loves reddit say that when he was young "he was scared to go to 4chan" and would just read about it from the subreddit. How much of a faggot do you have to be to be scared of a website? This kid was a fat 26 year old virgin loser. Reddit fucking sucks, who cares what they say.

And that's why some 4channers are so anti-reddit: they tried to troll there, got banned / downvoted because they're dumb, hateful trolls, and now are eternally butthurt about it. Pretty much nowhere else on the Internet will tolerate their bullshit, and so they're left with 4chan.
That's one reason at least. Another is that one of the key tactics of cults is to demonize and cut off any sources of outside information to create an ecosystem of mutually reinforcing delusions, and such a cult has invaded 4chan: the Trump / alt-right fascist cult.
Reddit can be terrible, especially the major subs, but if you compare it to 4chan it seems like a glistening beacon of intellectualism. 4chan is filled with literally mentally ill psychopaths.

>The Bible has significant literary merit though
Understatement of the year. It's such a fundamental part of the very essence of Western society it's ridiculous. It doesn't matter whether you're a Christian or not, it's absolutely amazing, and the best book I've ever read.

It's a crime that it's being forgotten about in modern western society. The common cultural history is going away, and a new rapid internet culture has taken its place, with references going back only a few months, or rarely, a few years.

As for Reddit, they're intellectually poisoned, and weak. It's society at its worst, no individual user is to blame. People act "reddit" on reddit. That's why it's almost always discussed in the abstract, or used as an adjective "that's so reddit", etc.

I think even reddit is appalled by 4chan's perverse deviations from the canon this year. Hitler and Taleb, really? The list is supposed to be based solely on literary merit, so the top ranks should be populated by the likes of: Homer, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Virgil, Boccaccio, Chaucer, Dante, Rabelais, Shakespeare, Cervantes, Milton, Swift, Voltaire, Sterne, Goethe, Stendhal, Gogol, Brontë, Thackeray, Poe, Dickens, Hawthorne, Melville, Flaubert, Turgenev, Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Eliot, James, Conrad, Chekhov, Kafka, Joyce, Proust, Mann, Hemingway, Faulkner, Céline, Borges, Nabokov, et. al.

Instead, we get Ted Kaczynski and Adolph Hitler. This place didn't used to be a joke. Get it together.

The works of the likes of Taleb, Kaczynski, Hitler, Spengler, Darwin, Marx, etc. may be great fodder for /lit/ discussions, but not appropriate as entries in the /lit/ top 100 list of literary works.

There were sometimes thinly veiled invasion threads like in the old days, but they were not called such. They were threads of just a bunch of people taking the piss out of everything. Survey threads in those days revealed it leaned heavily libertarian. The Nazi shit was still there as holdover from /new/, but it was minimal. There were always BBC threads, too.

Now, I'm not so sure /pol/ is in any way good for this site or representative of its "spirit". It's full of disturbing and unstable people that take themselves too seriously now. To the spirit of these posts I have to add that I've felt like the intellectual foundation is gone from not just 4chan but the whole internet. It is like the well was poisoned or maybe there are just too many people on it? I always think of this quote when I think of 4chan: "Any community that gets its laughs by pretending to be idiots will eventually be flooded by actual idiots who mistakenly believe that they're in good company." I think we're reaping that harvest now. Shame it seems the whole internet is like that. Is there any place left for genuine discussion? Forums are filled with gate-keepers and corrupt moderation, Reddit and social media are just for vapid like/karma validation, and 4chan is just troll/bait threads now. No one is serious or cares about intellect. What is left? What is next?

The answer, as distasteful as it may seem, is discord, group DMs on twitter, and closed facebook groups. I don't mean those as suggestions btw, it is where things are actually happening. We have reached a point where you can't just have an open forum where you open the page and join in, there has to be barriers of entry to maintain a distinct culture and this primarily takes the form of social vetting. 4chan is reddit, reddit is facebook, facebook is twitter, and twitter is instagram. It is all the same shit unless you get in to small and specific. Often these groups function as unhealthy cults of personality revolving around one or two people, you only find them because people on one site like your content and invite you to small group on another. This is why 4chan has been thoroughly owned for most of the decade, it has no defence mechanism it is forced to internalise and incorporate in to its culture whatever is pushed with enough frequency on the boards.

That makes sense. It's a shame really. The truly nice thing about 4chan is the anonymity and the ability to truly seek knowledge free from the past. It doesn't matter what you thought in the last thread and, similarly, your contributions or failures aren't tied to an account/post history. 4chan used to be like those Tibetan sand paintings in that everything was gone in the end but I suppose archives really ruined that.
>Often these groups function as unhealthy cults of personality revolving around one or two people....
Small groups like this are less interesting because you run into the risk of creating an echo chamber or excluding someone who might have a genuinely good opinion or idea.

I feel a bit like someone in search of a lost city, but instead of gold and riches I just want knowledge and truth. Truth is much harder to come by than riches these days and it is worth a lot more. It also feels like a curse... to desire a community passionate about that but to see what has become of the internet which could be so, so much more. The web is a mess and so few care.

True, and I am not really a fan, but these things function more like the esoteric continuation of broader more open sub-cultures found on other platforms. For example everyone in a discord on subject X will likely have a twitter account and engage in the broader twitter community revolving around subject X but only invite those they consider "worthy" to their discord or line or any other smaller, closed, platform. It is in these hermetic communities that really niche sensibilities get established and 'raid culture" lives on and in this way they can wage asymmetrical memetic warfare on other, much bigger sites.

Again, I am not here trying to advocate for it. This is just what is happening.

Right, I understand. I felt like the spaces for genuine discussion just disappeared, or that the idiots were just so loud that they drowned out anything real. I know what's going on. globohomo and the neoliberal project has failed, and resulting cultural artifacts are in rejection. The modern world is in decay, social justice is cancer etc, etc. I was on /pol/ posting about this shit years ago before it even went into overdrive. /pol/, as a center for that kind of reaction against the mainstream culture, has become too much of a liability for the rest of the site. Spaces within 4chan that don't deserve to be pulled into that mess are now in it. If it was confined to where it belongs then it wouldn't be a problem.

Furthermore, /pol/ spews misinformation, too. It's inevitable on a platform not built for anything but shitposting, so "protecting against media brainwashing" is questionable if its giving out its own brand of psychosis instead. Also, the feds ARE here. I'm not lying. It is not a safe space, for that reason. moot pushed chanology out of 4chan and alternate *chans took over it. This is what should happen to /pol/. Precisely these questions, and the adventures that will follow from them. What lies in the past is the rubble of a memetic apocalypse, what lies ahead is territory never before explored. There is no suitable audience to be found in the present, write and act for the future such that you are a man out of time, a contemporary of a society that doesn't yet exist and has never been imagined, alien to the eyes of the present. Write as if you are writing for someone who lives 1000 years in the future, seek to perform deeds that come from timeless virtues that speak of a life well lived through the ages. Take with you towards the future only what aids you in moving towards it, such that it becomes a living present.

Diveristy, or lack of diversity, is irrelevant to quality, and I can see no explanation for how it would. For one, it is diversity of two specific types, race and gender, but what about hair colour, eye colour, age, profession or class, era written, siblings or no siblings, innie or outie bellybutton, attached earlobe or dangly earlobe. None of this stuff has any bearing on an art work's quality, and neither does sex or race, but the argument in favour of greater diversity in a list of artistic quality is an assumption of a bias toward white men which must be corrected not by more scrupulous measurement of quality, but just an arbitrary inclusion of diversity..It's an intrusion of identity politics into art, and if you do not see why that is wrong, you're a bit of a twit.

Allow me to explain why you are a dilettante.
The list of good literature does not lean in the favour of European men. Sure, there's not exactly much written by the aboriginal melanesians, but there's a fuck of a lot of great stuff written by the Chinks and the Poos and the Mudslimes and even the Mesoamericans.
But you know what does lean in the favour of European men? The list of "books someone born in a Western country might have heard of if they weren't really into literature but thought they were". The Western Canon as known by a CS undergrad trying to better himself consists almost entirely of...well...this >>14393210. That's what you are, and it's what about 70% of this board is. These authors all ARE good, but there's so much more. You don't know enough to know how much you're missing out.

I'm tired of the same fucking threads about the same twenty books all the fucking time.
