It's not really that complicated.
The MSM realized nobody gave a shit when they called everyone "nazis" anymore, so they needed a new boogey-man.
They found some no-name "white nationalist" group, and decided that was the new big bad.
However, the media is composed of such tremendous faggots that when they went "EVERYONE LOOK OUT, IT'S THE *THE BAD GUYS*!", most people went "Oh, so since you lie about everything else, these must be the good guys."
Combine that with lumping a large and diverse group of people under it, everything from white nationalists to constitutionalists to second amendment activists, and suddenly you have a massive movement that previously had nothing to do with one another, as the left continues to cannibalize itself, and it's all their fault.
