This. Back in 70's he was the most famous intellectual, and probably the only famous intellectual. He even had snippets in woody allen films, and such. Also, his philosophy on media is more relevant now than ever. We basically are experiencing McLuhan predicted.

In philosophy Canada is about as relevant as one would assume, a few good thinkers here or there, most already mentioned. In terms of music it punches above its weight class (maybe more so in relevance than in talent), but in terms of literature it is severely lacking. There is no great Canadian novel, and the opportunity for there to be one has already passed.

I disagree. Canada, as an independent nation, is still relatively new and is still trying to find its own voice, amongst the intrusion of Britain and the US. There's still time for a great Canadian novel. Some scholars that I've met claim Beautiful Losers by Leonard Cohen to be our closest, or even the short stories of Alice Munro.

Asian immigration is a lot less terminal than immigration from countries with sub 100 IQs. At least our immigrants are capable of owning businesses, putting trash in garbage cans and maintaining infrastructure, which cannot be said for American or European immigration.
