How do the english cope with knowing that they're being upstaged by the americans and the irish? The last 200 years of english prose writers got dabbed on by a drunk irish fart fetishist and they've failed to produce a single good poet since the romantics, which is quite pathetic when compared to the legion of good poets america has produced

England needed to promote an english language writer from Ireland to fight the irish language, so they picked this guy.
It's a meme.

Irish and Americans are English anyway. Once a colony, always a colony

>colony
How do you say "colony" in english, Pierre?
LOL you don't even have an actual english word for that...
That's what happens when your country get irremediably crushed by some french-speaking Normans.

anyone else here read Ulysses and for some reason decided to check out spraknotes at some more difficult chapter and discovered they'd been missing entire sections of the plot

I didn't even piece together the horse race subplot until it's mentioned explicitely by the Citizen

i unironically love Ulysses at the start, but ch 14, 15,16 and 17 suck so much dick i can rate whole book only 3 out of 5. I honestly think Joyce lost his talent by the end of life.

A few things I didn't pick up on:
>Stephen's sisters selling his books in Wandering Rocks
>the "Elijah is coming" in Wandering Rocks being the literal throwaway that Bloom tossed in the river
>Buck and Haines stole Stephen's key at the end of Oxen of the Sun (still don't know if this actually happened in the chapter or was just mentioned retrospectively in Eumaeus)

there's another chapter in which every paragraph is in a different style of english from like the medieval to then-modern american and I'm not gonna mention more to avoid spoiling but many events and revelations happen therein and literally half of them flew over my head lel

France is an English colony too, and was from well before the Norman 'conquest' which was a matter of internal politics

Arguing in nationalities is the stuff of lower part of the ego. If that. Do you really think that because I am English that I think like everybody else here? Reminds me of the mythos around Shakespeare in the US during the 19th century. Absolute nonsense. He is Shakespeare because he is universal, not because he is English.

Also Joyce is fucking awful to read. He writes so Irish.
