The majority of resources and labour for the western products people like academics consume ravenously come from 3rd world countries at 3rd worlders expense while they live cushy air conditioned lives. Yet they would dismiss dependency theory as Marxist drivel. That is to say that the political actions of the west can almost always be viewed through the lens of pragmatic resource grabbing. Spanish-American war, banana wars, neocolonialism, Iraq, etc.

This doesn’t apply to professors, but administrators in academia are almost exclusively parasitic sociopaths who are incapable of functioning in the notmal world, and are only able to find respect (even in insignificant amounts) from naive and egotistical teenagers half their age.
Academia could be digitalized and made freely accessible to literally everyone for a fraction of the cost, without any drop in standards. I sincerely hope this happens in my lifetime, so I can see those useless hacks tossed out onto the street and forced to confront the fact that they’ve wasted their life fudging numbers and creating artificial monopolies/scarcity without producing any tangible positive value whatsoever.

At least here in krautland the professors I met so far in the subjects I'm currently signed up for (prehistoric archeology and China studies) tend to be capable and intelligent people highly dedicated to their niche subjects of study.

They exist. They're a minority, but wield disproportionate power and are disproportionately loud. They're part of a striver class who is largely concerned with being told they're Good People with the Right Opinions by their betters, and with consuming in comfort. You won't have them in Yurope. They're only found in Universities and certain corporate departments (namely HR and tech). Their value comes from the fact that they will swallow any bullshit someone in power feeds them and happily regurgitate it out; they fall apart when put into scenarios where they can't just screech The Right Opinions and drown out dissent.

It's worth noting that when the US truly shits the bed, they'll migrate to Europe and get promotions to People Who Wield ACTUAL Power. But then, all Americans will jump up a rank or two when that happens.
