Can someone link the preperatory literature for reading Ulysses? I forgot to save it and saw it a while ago, also, from what I remember, why the fuck is the entire summa theologica there? I was planning on reading it for other reasons, but I have been curious ever since. Why does one need an entire, in depth, extensive knowledge of the catholic fatih to understand Ulysses?

Knowing about Irish history & the relationship between Protestants and Catholics in Ireland is more important than reading Aquinas' entire Summa for the sake of reading Ulysses.
Knowing about British history in general helps too.

I'd also recommend reading A Portrait and maybe The Dead. Other than that, get a guide and jump right in. I'd recommend not over preparing yourself and just allowing Joyce's prose to take you on a fantastic journey.

irish history? British history? I know nothing except those fellas worked on the railroard, and the brits founded the colonies that became america, is there an article or something that would sum it up. I don't mean something insanely short, as that would be an insane request, but I don't fancy reading an entire book on history, of any culture really.

monet>vangough imo, although art hoes will contest it heavily

There are a lot of references to literature in Ulysses, but not all of them are required to comprehend the main themes. Here are the things that are obligatory:
>Odyssey
>Dubliners
>A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
"Hamlet" is arguably obligatory as well.
I guess there could also be made a list of obligatory reads for individual chapters, for example Chapter 2 would have what >>14176790 said (Irish history & the relationship between Protestants and Catholics in Ireland) while Chapter 9 would have require basic knowledge of Shakespeare's life.

so are you saying I shouldnt jump into joyce with Ulysses? But with some earlier works.

>so are you saying I shouldnt jump into joyce with Ulysses
Of course not. That would be a stupid move to make and not just because of the difficulty of the prose but also because one of the three principal (let's say "main" characters) of "Ulysses" is developed in "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" (he is the main character of that work) and certain characters from "Dubliners" appear in "Ulysses". You read in this order:
Dubliners -> A Portrait of the Artist as a Young -> Ulysses
Before Ulysses you need to also have Odyssey under your belt, you can put that in wherever you like (e.g. Odyssey -> Dubliners or Dubliners -> Odyssey -> Portrait)

Not him, but it's a lot more reasonable and perhaps a tad logic, don't you think?

strawman. I was asking for the chart that I had previously seen. I understand the sentiment you are representing here, as with any great work you cannot possibly underestimate the chance of life changing aspects. But this was unhelpful and simply full of cringy spite.

if your going to do this at least have the courtesy to leave the artists name, or even the pieces name, somewhere. In the file name or in the post. I hate when I can't find a nice painting.
