It's a B&N classics collection that contains The Art of War, The Tao Te Ching, Confucian Analects, The Great Learning, The Doctrine of the Mean, and The Works of Mencius. Pretty much all of the major Eastern schools of philosophy (excluding certain Buddhist works like the Bhagavad Gita which I'm still missing) which I find fascinating. Incidentally, I was just in Costco earlier today and found out they had a book section with a book very similar to this one.

I'm the guy who posted the retort.

Buddhism arose long after Hinduism had become a tradition, both written and orally. The Vedic texts are the original Hindu scripture, written somewhere between 6-2000 BC. The Buddha lived somewhere around 500 BC (he was contemporary with Plato). The Gita is a Hindu text written rather late, right around the 2nd Century AD. It can be regarded as a sapiential (wisdom) text not unlike the Corpus Hermes, the Dead Sea Scrolls, perhaps Job/Psalms, et al.

The Buddha arose in contradiction to Hindu teachings. He is different in that he does NOT believe in a self (atman) and he sees that the end of suffering (samsara) is the chief goal of all spiritual life. Hinduism preaches a belief in a "true self" (again, atman) and the union (yoga) of the true self with God. Although they differ in this way, both are staunchly aescetical and both schools of thought insist upon abstinence and almsgiving. I know much less about Buddhism than I do Hinduism.

>>14175774
To answer your question most directly, I don't think there is a strict disavowal of one by the other, or visa versa. Eastern schools of thought tend not to be dogmatic in this way (although they are in others). Criticism of one school by the other has been common among eastern people for a long time, and this continues. This isn't isolated to just Hinduism/Buddhism by the way, anon. Islam and Jainism are also a part of this conversation (if we're speaking with regard to the India and the little countries near India [Bangladesh, etc.]). I got a meme degree in this stuff. Please ask away, thank you.

STEMfag checking in. Pic related is my current "stack", although I tend to bounce around a lot and read a lot of journal articles and stuff like that as well.

These are all really great books btw, and Signals by Bryan Skyrms is readable for laymen, I would highly recommend it. It's a great work on philosophy of language, and Bryan Skyrms is arguably one of the most important philosophers and social scientists alive today. His approach to language is formal and rigorous in style, but his philosophical presuppositions are thoroughly outside of the mainstream in analytic philosophy (although less so for linguistics).

He basically presents a (semi)formal analysis of natural language, but without relying on any notions like "truth", "falsity", "reference", "representation", etc. In the spirit of Wittgenstein, David Lewis, and Democritus (or at least that's how Skyrms himself bills it).

Hinduism and Buddhists are both "Brahmanic" religions. They both hold that there is an pantheon which is itself composed of God. All physical matter is an expression of God, and the passing of time is a living revelation. The initiate does his best to unite his mind with God in the Hindu religion. Krishna is not commonly worshipped to Buddhists, although there are Tantric texts where Krshna is mentioned (I can try to reference these if you'd like). Krishna is what we call an "avatar" of Vishnu (I believe). Essentially this means that Krshna is a human-like manifestation of God; one might compare him to Christ because of his capability of revealing the true nature of "the father." Each major deity in Hinduism has many, many avatars.

It's important for the new student to really wrestle with krshna to understand what it is he represents. I can delve into this more, as it will be of great interest to any reader on this board (many of whom I assume will disagree with me as I fall into obscurity trying to explain this bizarre immortal).

What is with all the asshats on this board LARPing as Hindus and purposefully misrepresenting basic facts? Buddhism has gods, but they're no more than beings who are also subject to death and decay. For the Buddhist all matter is empty of intrinsic existence, far from being "an expression of God." This is basic knowledge you'd get from Wikipedia, you mong:

Not a single person I know who has sunk a considerable amount of money into their collection of books is well read. There is no reason to buy books to which you don't come back to often, unless they cost close to nothing and unless you, for some reason, don't have a stable access to a library. I'm convinced that the act of collecting books physically goes against an anti-materialist mindset of people that indeed are well read.

You do you. If you didn't like it, toss it.

I personally like to relax every now and them with some dumb thriller, like Alistar Maclean or something. But you bought it for a reason, throwing it out because it isn't highbrow enough is the ultimate pseud move.

Adelaide Proctor's Poems - 1835
Hume's essays (vol.1) - 1823
Goldsmith's Plays and Poetry -1833

Pic only shows Hume's book. And I think the little Goldsmith one is visible in back left.

Books are expensive if you only shop at Barnes and Nobel or similar style bookstores.
Craig'slist is a godsend. There's almost always some old guy in my area with mountains of books selling them for like 1-5 bucks a pop.
Goodwill also are stock full of used books. Usually most of what they have isn't too quality. However, if you like classics they'll almost always have some recognizable names. People that go and spend 20 bucks at B&N for something like Catcher in the Rye, or the Brother's Karamazov are making a huge mistake because I guarantee you can pick up that book for 3 bucks at some store in your area.
Please anons. I've made the mistake. Don't be like me. Learn.
>but anon. buying shitty used books is gross
>there's nothing like buying a fresh copy of "your own book"
walks of life. but for me, having a book is always better than not having it. As long as it's readable I'll get it.
