There are a lot of books that are really good at the beginning and continue all the way through. Then there are the other books. The book that took the longest time to get good (in my opinion) was A Canticle for Leibowitz. So I dropped it and picked it up many times before I finished it.

Goodreads has Member Compatibility and Book Compatibility Test. See image for more details.
It's possible to create a secret group. "This group is secret. New members must be approved by the group moderators. The group will not appear in search results or in the profiles of its members. Only members can see the group information, polls, and discussion board. Only Moderators can invite new members."
The group's purpose would be to share Goodreads profiles to see compatibility for recommendations without having to post accounts in the thread. There doesn't seem to be a "books most popular with this group / best average rating for group" which is disappointing. Probably isn't similar for all friends either. Another use would be for polling, as it would require more time and effort for someone to rig any particular poll, especially if the votes were set not to be anonymous. The bookshelf could possibly serve as /sffg/ recommendations. Not sure what else purpose a group could serve.
An alternative would be a publicly editable pastelink listing Goodreads accounts.
Anyway, tell me your thoughts.

The monthly reading for November is Let the Right One In!

The above doesn't require confirmation on my part, so if you open that link while logged into a Goodreads account it'll add you to the group. Says it'll be valid for 30 days. After that, I guess would have to have another provided, though if I make everyone a moderator, then anyone could do so.

So. I've been trying to come up with good names for my creatures and characters. But the fact is that I realize something; I just can't come up with good names. Or at least names that haven't been used yet.
I was thinking about using the ''Hussie'' technique, that is to take words from foreign languages, mix them, and create a whole new name with them. But I'm not sure, I'm trying to make it sound exotic.
Plus it's a book about creatures living in a world without any humans à la Dark Crystal, coming with non-human sounding names is hard as shit.

She did some nasty stuff and lots of people died but as far as I understand her only goal was to rule. She doesn't seem like a terrible dictator type like the dominator. I got the impression that most people's lives would go on as normal if she ruled the north. Other than that goblin and one-eye were hilarious. I laughed out loud at a part when one-eye was put on a torture rack and he and goblin started bantering. Are the two other series good or should I just stop here

I think I'm going to have non-consensual sex with Neil Gayman.

Yes, in fact right this moment I have resolved to rape this man. All of my faculties and resources are now going to be put into achieving this end. The way this man controls the contortions of his face elicits a deep, ape-ish urge within me to do extremely violent and sexual damage to him.

If you think about it, how is Neil Gayman different from a woman? They are equally timid. Equally frivolous. Equally acquiescent. Equally narcissistic. Equally upset by a combination of words or ideas that do not conform to the status-quo. And no doubt Mr. Gayman has sucked a penis too--maybe just a silicon one (for now), but nevertheless he has tried it; has been struck with the same sort of 'oh-i'm-so-so-naughty' inclination that seizes all women at some point in their life and with the frenzied tom-tom of feminine sexuality blaring in their head which is only ever empty and only ever filled when the image or implication of a Penis can be grasped in external reality, and just like such a woman has Neil Gayman greedily taken hold of the dildo that he secretly keeps in his top drawer (why disguise it further? why, wouldn't he be happy if someone were to discover his little perversion? oh think of how oh so so naughty that would be!) and after taking the full 7.5" of rubber down his throat he is filled with such a thrill such that no expression of his "masculine" sexuality has ever come close to attaining.

Hmm, indeed, the lines between Woman and Neil Gayman continue to blur, and my dick continues to rise. Raping him could be ethically and epistemologically justified, both through Utilitarian ethics and Platonic Teleology, but I will not go into that here. Suffice to say that raping Neil Gayman would be a net benefit for the world as such, as material entity and conceptual ideal. It would be a rape that would satisfy so many hearts, so many minds, and most importantly my own penis.

I am decided: Neil Gayman will be raped within the month. I will devote myself to finding out his residency, his routines, and I will plot and plan my moment of violation meticulously. This is a very real goal I have set, and I shall know neither rest nor mortal satisfaction until it has been attained.

Opposite or not, it's one of the worst reads in the fantasy genre. It's place in history is undoubtedly there, but the book is pretty bad by modern standards. Hey guys, usually I'm more of a lurker but I'm 200+ pages into my fantasy novel and I've got some questions as far as worldbuilding that you're as apt to answer truthfully as anyone--

1. Does it upset you when fantasy lands have parallels with ones from real life? Think Valyria from ASoIaF and Rome. If you're fine with it, how important do you find it that the parallel sticks? A character from a region based on Wales having a German name, for example.

2. Is there a limit to how many characters you'll care about in a 'party'? Mine's gotten rather big - it's up to 7 characters as of the beginning of Act 3.

3. Nonsense words. The kind, for example, you'd find in the names of barbarian clans - phonetic gibberish with hard sounds and lots of vaguely Slavic leanings - Trogun-Voll, for example, as a barbarian race's name. What do you think is the best way to come up with these linguistically isolated words?

I can't really give a take on 1st or 3rd person POV. It works or fails depending on the story you have to tell.
An all seeing God recounting what happened might work for some places, but an event seen directly from the protagonist's eyes might have more impact.

I don't sperg over the perspective, I sperg over the number of protagonists, and stupid shit people put in to seem "quirky" or as a "wink" to those in the know. Which is why I hate the "banter / jokes while you fight for your life in a party" cliche.

Also stay away from pop culture references, no quirky behaviors(unless they are possessed by a demon and have to be purged with the heat of fire), no modern phrases / ways of speech if your shit is happening in an older time. I don't think there is any factual evidence for either argument. Soulcatcher said she did, but there was no mention of twins among the 4 sisters either and the lady was supposedly the youngest of the 4 and was left out of a party that the older 3 went to (so not minutes younger).
>>14130047
Probably overhyped for the wrong reasons. I see it called grimdark and edgy and I went in never having read things by abercrombie etc. It might have been edgy in the 80s but I found it pretty tame. Some rape and a few shits and bitches. It doesn't hold your hand. There are numerous descriptions of people and places that may be put into perspective later or not really mentioned again. The writing style took me a little time to get into. Sentences are usually short and choppy and dialogue is really casual like you would expect from soldiers just shooting the shit. Once you get into the rhythm it's nice.

The book overall puts very little into fights and battles and traveling. One paragraph they may be weeks away from a destination and the next they're in the city. Not much about slashing swords and dodging. Magic is very vague with finger movements and hopping around (reminds me of witch doctors). It's very much driven by character interactions and unraveling the goals and allegiances of others. I think a lot of people go in expecting this super gritty murder rape mercenary gang and get turned off because they think the characters are acting like children instead. It's just a solid fantasy story.

let me guess it all makes sense in chapter 57 though right? This is one of those books that everyone hates but pretends to think is the most amazing thing ever.

>Certain mystes aver that the real world has been constructed by the human mind, since our ways are governed by the artificial categories into which we place essentially undifferentiated things, things weaker than our words for them. From an understanding viewpoint the difference between Wolfe's worldbuilding through archaic language and the average fantasy authors worldbuilding through words and titles they just made up is negligible. The real difference is that with Wolfe I can find a deeper meaning if I decide to look it up, which I admittedly don't do most of the time because just like with generic fantasy lingo context lets you figure out an approximate anyway. But it's nice that you're given the choice.

I'm most of the way through Gideon the Ninth and it's pretty good. Has one of the more incongruous(?) descriptions I've seen vs the actual content. Publisher description makes it sound like a space opera action adventure With Gay Themes for twee teens, but it's actually a locked room mystery in a very Tsutomu Nihei/Q Hayashida feeling setting.
