My understanding is that he uses the Marx definition of capital, but pushes it to its philosophical limits in that he considers capital almost a sort of intelligence. Capital acts as leverage for capital and thus, capital creates exponentially more capital. A capitalist system explodes exponentially into more and more capital until it consumes everything else for the sake of capital. Generally, this is true and it’s pretty obvious how since the onset of capital use as a commodity in history, everything has shifted more and more towards acquiring more capital. People no longer work to survive or to create if they are beyond surviving. They work to reach a specific capital threshold and beyond that acquire more capital and Land believes this is the nature of the system, not necessarily the humans. In the same way an AI might create subsequently more intelligent AIs until we’re on a path of just exponential Intelligence explosion capital acts in much the same way and even lends itself towards intelligence in the exact form of AI. AI can be a very dangerous thing and we as a species are not quite prepared to say whether we should morally push onward in the creation of intelligence capable of exponential multiplication, yet we will because the system of capital will move us in that direction regardless.
