That's not an argument, they're nostalgic for it because the politicians weren't as openly corrupt then. The trouble there is that the transition was too quick, greed took over rapidly. But sure, capitalism totally doesn't work and a bunch of starving old people wishing for the "good ol' days" shows it, despite the degradation of the rural communities and the lack of government contributions towards public infrastructure.

It's an attractive fantasy for people with certain materialist assumptions. History doesn't refute communism, it's socialism's inability to compete with the price coordinated economy in terms of efficiency that destroys it as a practical method of organisation. Thee serious communists day dream about creating some super advanced AI's that can tell billions of people what exactly needs to be made and exactly where stuff needs to go because that's what it would take to compete with capitalism. The less serious communists pretend the problem doesn't exist.

Lithuania’s GDP has risen over 500% since the collapse of the Soviet Union. This picture proves nothing other than the power of nostalgia and the worthlessness of opinion polls. The reason Lithuania is so crap now is largely because of young people leaving and ugly communist architecture left over from soviet times.

Because there are still examples of communist countries that are actually quite alright, such as Cuba.

The common rebuttal to this that I have found is one that focuses on the relative impoverished nature of Cuba, but this is an argument constructed from a place of ignorance. Yes Cuba is relatively poor, but upon inspecting the geopolitical and external economic factors working against Cuba, I would argue that the country is relatively prosperous, all things considered.

It's a small island nation that isn't exactly overflowing with natural resources, and it has been under an extreme embargo for over 60 years now. While Cuba is capable of feeding itself, it is reliant on foreign nations with more robust resources to come into possession of products made in advanced industries, as Cuba lacks these resources itself. This access to the global economy is severely crippled by US efforts to strangle the country to death, a death that will never come to a mostly self-sufficient country like Cuba.

So while Cuba lacks a sizeable influx of foreign resources, and this stunts the economic development of the island nation, it still maintains a decent quality of life with a few stipulations that stem from the lack of those resources. Medicine, car parts, computers (though less of this than the other) are very difficult for the country to source, and as a result are highly scarce. These things still enter the country, but there is an indisputable shortage. And yet the people don't starve, they are relatively happy and taken care of, and violent crime is one of the lowest in the region (as estimated by third party sources)

It cannot be said that these shortages are due to an internal failure of the Cuban economy, but a result of the United States interfering with the ability of Cuba to do trade with countries that would willingly export surplus goods to Cuba.

To say that communist Cuba has failed due to a flaw of communism would be a blatant lie. Firstly, Cuba is anything but a failed state. That is not to say that it doesn't have it's problems, but those issues are hardly run-away disasters of other communist countries. Secondly, one can say communism IS the source of Cuba's problems, but only with the stipulation that the reasoning is not for any intrinsic issue of the system, rather it's caused by the neighboring superpower bullying Cuba for being communist. However this is a complete change in dialectics and topic of discussion, and I highly doubt that this was a criteria that you incorporated into your ideas about the failures of communism, as it stretches more into the domain of realpolitik calculus than it does economic ideology.

Which is not to say that I myself am a communist, this is just a tired argument.

Yeah but they suck and repress art and science and life itself. The only thing that makes them sustainable is that they repress ideas, which never die, which is fine for humans that don't have any ideas, and need to be ordered. But honestly fuck those people who don't ask questions and don't like questions being asked. Authoritarians are afraid of inquiry, they see it as chaos. I'm not even a liberal democrat or a republican, but I completely refuse to live according to the logic of a repressive regime and demand to be ordered by the logic of inquiry, which necessitates justice, equity and freedom. The only sustainable order is THE LAW OF MIND.

Right, because Cuba is under an embargo that prevents the country from importing goods from countries that have primary industries which output the materials needed to manufacture lightbulbs. At best, cubans can recycle materials to make filament-based lightbulbs, and they often do. Please try to actually read and comprehend the post you're replying to, before responding. This is a consequence of an external force preventing access to a global market, which stops Cuba from gaining access to goods reliant on resources not found in their country. That is not a philosophical flaw of communism, that is a geopolitical consideration of a superpower trying it's hardest to make a neighboring country unlivable.

Of course the irony is that Americans go bankrupt every day from the costs associated with private healthcare in their country. I would rather be concerned about bringing my lightbulbs and soap with me to the hospital than financial ruin because my insurance company shafted me and refuses to pay $25,000 of my $50,000 medical bill.

How livable do you think independent Hawai'i would fare if it were placed under the same trade restrictions for 60 years?
