Naked Lunch is unironically better written, more interesting/engaging, and has stood up great with age thus far. Eye on the other had is really just bland writing with little style, and the actions and motives of the characters don't hold up over time. The shock value isn't engaging in the present. I could find examples of the exact same things they do in that text on this site right now. Naked Lunches grotesque lovecraftian horror snuff orgy with bugs, drugs, and pedophiles is pretty insane to this day.

While this is true, Bataille was far edgier than Burroughs. The guy was the edgiest man to ever live.

Sure, I wouldn't disagree with the idea the his philosophy and analysis is probably the edgiest form of philosophical framework that one could possibly articulate. That said, it isn't on display in this short shock novella.

I can probably think of ten better candidates for that title off the top of my head.

He is talking about his deep inner philosophical justification for abhorrent and demonic acts. It is one thing to just do edgy shit, it is another thing to build a philosophical system that justifies it as the correct action to take in most situations. That is why he is edgy.

Yeah but Sade or Gilles de Rais (objects of Bataille's study) might be better candidates and Bataille still had some moralistic things e.g. regarding Vichy and French Resistance

no, that's why he's gay. bataille isn't edgy. de sade is edgy.

I find there’s something creepy about Bataille that’s not in Sade, etc. Maybe it’s the blandness of the style. Or something. He just makes me feel creepy.

Is de Sade creepy? Serious question I have never read any of his work, I thought it was all just gross out shlock crap. Is there cool shit in there?

If it is it sounds awesome

the cover recalls to my mind the superstition that peacock feathers are bad luck

Story of the eye is hilarious. Great meme. Kinda hot, kinda gross, keeps you reading.

Accursed Share, Theory of Religion, Inner Experience, and On Nietzsche are all quite relevant to the contemporary luciferian jew illuminati too.

The experience of reading it is interesting because he pro freedom and you naturally agree but he's way off the rails so its hard to know how to take it. also I wouldn't have fucked with it if that stuff didn't turn me on

Imagine knowing one of these absolute degenerates and not killing them. That's probably why kerouac drank himself to death.

I wouldn’t say he’s creepy but he reads a bit weirdly to me. Sometimes his writing feels like it’s a dark satire on the excesses of the rich— they rape, kill and eat the poor literally because they’ve already done it figuratively. Sort of like Jonathan Swift in an extremely bad mood. But then it turns into something that feels like he’s getting off on all his rape / bondage / snuff fantasies and the satire goes out the window while he beats off. Then suddenly everyone is discussing 18th Century materialist philosophy or libertinism. Then the satire starts up again, then the masturbation. So while it’s not creepy, it’s definitely an experience. Sometimes he can be so over the top he’s funny, though. (The crazy fat guy in Juliette with all the living furniture who only eats human meat, some of the really cruel weird shit he thinks to do to people in 120 Days of Sodom, etc.). But other times he’s just boring.

Delany has a tryhard-variant edgy that you can't take seriously. Hogg isn't even disturbing in that regard, I just think of it as the internal monologue of a special ed student.

>> No.14064561

Just want it on record, this is a great thread. Honestly, call me stupid but I believe Naked Lunch is a masterpiece. And that's coming from someone who loths post-modernism.

>> No.14064576

Burroughs and Bataille at least were up front about their obsessions through and through until the end. Tastes differ but I enjoyed both Naked Lunch and Story enough in college.

Burroughs was married and had a son
Bataille was a huge faggot
