It's good, but it's mostly geared to a popular audience/people who aren't very into books. He has a lot of charming sections, such as when he inverts scholarly convention and provides a "Shakespearean reading of Freud". I read it when I was really young & it really got me into close reading & interpretation.

If yer interested in unique Bloom books, I highly rec The Book of J. The premise is ultimately impossible to prove, but he does a great job of describing his thoughts on biblical authorship &c..

It's also very psychology-oriented. He writes a lot about Dante's characters and more or less ignores Dante's imagetic technique, which is, in my view, the major source of delight and greatness of vision in the Divine Comedy, and that which puts him above Shakespeare in my estimation.

Regardless, he writes very entertainingly and has many interesting insights. I like to say that people like Samuel Johnson, Harold Bloom and George Steiner aren't really critics, but rather novelists whose characters are books and other authors. That's what makes them more interesting than critics who are more analytical (even though this group also has its advantages).

Harold Bloom is the spirit of this board.
