Didn't he have to go see a therapist? How can I trust someone who doesn't even have their life in order and follow their advice?

Seeing a therapist for depression partially caused by your wife, who you've known since you were a kid, getting cancer is appropriate.

The book isn't meant to deal with that sort of stuff. His book is there for self help, not to replace therapy.

It is, you can find it in Chapter 5 (titled, "Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them").

To be more charitable, it's in the context of Peterson's argument that parents have a responsibility to discipline their children. He wrote that this would lessen their suffering in the long run.

To me the excerpt is an anecdote probably relating to a concept he was talking about . How does the excerpt show that he is overrated?

It's not persuasive. It doesn't support the idea that disciplining children saves them from long-term suffering.

Furthermore, Peterson's writing style dresses up simplistic ideas (like the one I've summarized) in biblical language to create an illusion that they are profound.

Another example:
>"You cannot be protected from the things that frighten you and hurt you, but if you identify with the part of your being that is responsible for transformation, then you are always the equal, or more than the equal of the things that frighten you."

Perhaps the act of dressing up ideas is valuable to some readers (by making it more memorable or persuasive).

But I think fans of the book think the ideas truly are profound, which makes the book more highly rated than what it deserves.
