Machen doesn't get enough love. I haven't read Great God Pan yet but absolutely loved The White People and Other Weird Stories. Solid collection.

Got some recommendations on /lit and also picked some of my own selections to read this month. Today at the library I’m picking up We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson, The Monk by Matthew Lewis, The Castle of Ortranto by Horace Walpole, Collected Works of Poe, and The Turn of the Screw by Henry James.

Not sure which to start with but will start today.

He essentially just tries to be a shittier version of Lovecraft. Often his work is a tad more abstract than Lovecraft, like there is a lot of abstract psychological cosmic horror. He describes the abstract portions extremely well though. I would say some of his material is right on par with Lovecraft but other things fall flat. It is the same with any other short story author I guess. If you pick up the one I mentioned, Grimscribe, the first story is literally just a really great Lovecraftian story.

Also a lot of his stories are online for free.

Does anyone have experience with pic related? Is it a good edition. The cover looks cheap and I'm concerned the font will be tiny and book itself riddled with typos.
