What should I read for Halloween this year? Looking for something comfy and engrossing, can be contemporary or Victorian idc.

Or just post your favourite horrors

House of Leaves is comfy, but an exercise in typography.

The Willows by Algernon Blackwood is THE comfy horror story.
The man has it down to a science, if you like it I recommend you check out The Wendigo too.

Read some Lovecraft or if you have already read everything Lovecraft has to offer read some Ligotti. I was recently reading his book of short stories Grimscribe, there is quite a bit of interesting material there.

I don't think it's scary unless you're a big cosmic horror fan, lovecraft fan that gets its not just a big kaiju, or you're deranged.

The ritual is cool if you're into evolutionary nihilism/horror.

Red pill me on Ligotti. I’ve never read his books. Do they have a similar feel to Lovecraft?

I hear The Fisherman by John Langan is good but I can't find a copy of it for under a tenner so it's too rich for my blood .... at least for a horror novel.

Machen doesn't get enough love. I haven't read Great God Pan yet but absolutely loved The White People and Other Weird Stories. Solid collection.

Got some recommendations on /lit and also picked some of my own selections to read this month. Today at the library I’m picking up We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson, The Monk by Matthew Lewis, The Castle of Ortranto by Horace Walpole, Collected Works of Poe, and The Turn of the Screw by Henry James.

Not sure which to start with but will start today.

He essentially just tries to be a shittier version of Lovecraft. Often his work is a tad more abstract than Lovecraft, like there is a lot of abstract psychological cosmic horror. He describes the abstract portions extremely well though. I would say some of his material is right on par with Lovecraft but other things fall flat. It is the same with any other short story author I guess. If you pick up the one I mentioned, Grimscribe, the first story is literally just a really great Lovecraftian story.

Also a lot of his stories are online for free.

Seems to be a /lit/ favourite/meme. Can't seem to get a hold of it though. Is an ebook my only real option?

Does anyone have experience with pic related? Is it a good edition. The cover looks cheap and I'm concerned the font will be tiny and book itself riddled with typos.

I liked the Navidson Record a lot.
It wasn't clearly scary, but it made me quite uncomfortable pretty often. The changing geography, the maze, the darkness, the "minotaur"...
