When I read the beginning of Lolita a long time ago I thought his description of the Humbert's summer romance when he was young was so beautiful. Really struck me at the time. When I continued reading though Nabokov's style and, yeah, the french started to grate on me so I stopped

Anon refers to the structure of his novels. They aren't just simple narratives. His structures are nice and legant. Another good structure writer is Bolaño, who I think never (or seldom) repeated a narrative structure. Just compare 2666 with Nazi Literature in the Americas or The Savage Detectives with By Night in Chile. Vastly different structures.

His prose IS beautiful though. When he talks about Lolita sitting on his lap while he mimics a toothache to account for his rushed patter or when he says life is a joke if it can be proven that it doesn’t matter that he hurt her. What’s exactly your problem with it? It’s beautifully written, emotional, and profound.
