They aren't really an alternative to factory farming, most of them are basically as awful to soil and habitats as cash croppers. Since we are talking about veganism here, they are dependent entirely on international trade so they can even get their basic nutrients. If I had a local diet as a vegan, I would have wild rosehip, root veg, potatoes, wheat and oats until spring.
At least here for me, I can get fresh fish, meat and some vegetables locally all year, seasonally I can get some fruit seasonally but realistically I am going to have to shop at a supermarket if I want any variation.
