My point is those books are self-contained in their own field, so why should it matter if the author is a traditionalist or not?

categorizing a book by a traditionalist about alchemy as a work of alchemy is like categorizing ulysses as a greek epic poem or calling hegel a platonist. its anachronistic-- if you want knowledge of alchemy read things like Book of the Composition of Alchemy or Turba Philosophorum, if you want to know about the traditionalist view of alchemy read titus burckhardt. many esotericists antecedent to the flourishing of alchemy write about alchemy, but that doesn't mean they are alchemists.

He's in direct dialogue but I would still consider it secondary. Almost a scholarly work as are his other works on yoga and buddhism and magic (his magic book would be primary tho) and so on.

The only primary text I can think at the top of my head are Paracelsus' works on alchemy. There's also quite a bit of overlap between Hermeticism and Alchemy, and it's hard to distinguish between the two since the latter originated from the former.

I would also throw in the Taschen book Alchemy & Mysticism for artwork.
