With Plotinus its kind of a case of how you identify - if you identify with your material aspects and let your animalistic impulses control your behaviour you will come back in a more material and animalistic form, if you identify with your higher soul and your faculty of discursive thought then you will be reincarnated in a more immaterial and divine form, your soul might join with the soul of a star, or become part of Soul itself.

>> No.13908093

>>13907720
Add Titus Burckhardt's Alchemy: Science of the Cosmos, Science of the Soul to the list under Alchemy.

Eastern esoterica categories should also be added to the list.

My point is those books are self-contained in their own field, so why should it matter if the author is a traditionalist or not?

>> No.13908448

>>13908368
categorizing a book by a traditionalist about alchemy as a work of alchemy is like categorizing ulysses as a greek epic poem or calling hegel a platonist. its anachronistic-- if you want knowledge of alchemy read things like Book of the Composition of Alchemy or Turba Philosophorum, if you want to know about the traditionalist view of alchemy read titus burckhardt. many esotericists antecedent to the flourishing of alchemy write about alchemy, but that doesn't mean they are alchemists.

if its a primary text written in the 20th century then no it is not fucking alchemy because no matter how good a scholar you think julius evola is he was not able to physically or mentally transport himself several hundred years into the past to engage with a tradition that was LARGELY based around secret knowledge that wasn't written down.

It's a secondary text, so ya...

What's wrong with primary sources from the twentieth century anyway? Fulcanelli, for example, is great.
>>13907937
Maybe Way of the Tarot by Jodorowski too.

>> No.13916393

>>13915936
I made the list.

I think the alchemy section could use more primary sources, yes, and I also think the cabala section needs to be improved.

>>13916363
A tarot section might be a good idea too.

Pretty much this (I have only read about 90% of books mentioned tho)

Maybe a little less actually...

Probably should add an Astrology section with Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos too.

>> No.13916747

>>13916363
its not really secondary if hes in direct dialogue with his sources. theres nothing wrong with primary texts from the twentieth century as long as you understand that they are a very different thing from an actual medieval alchemical text

>> No.13917965

>>13916747
He's in direct dialogue but I would still consider it secondary. Almost a scholarly work as are his other works on yoga and buddhism and magic (his magic book would be primary tho) and so on.

>> No.13918216

>>13916393
The only primary text I can think at the top of my head are Paracelsus' works on alchemy. There's also quite a bit of overlap between Hermeticism and Alchemy, and it's hard to distinguish between the two since the latter originated from the former.

I would also throw in the Taschen book Alchemy & Mysticism for artwork.

>> No.13918229

Axial civilizations and world history
Leiden: Brill, 2005.

>> No.13918245

>>13918216
That taschen is quite nice tho wish it were bigger (for the artwork) and more in-depth. Paracelsus is already present elsewhere ;^)
>>13918229
Brill is badass. I approve of this recc (tho I have not read it)
