Do you think Spaniards put any effort into pronouncing the names of Anglo-Saxon authors and titles? Or even translating the latter? 'The Catcher In the Rye' was first published with the title 'The Hidden Hunter' there. The pun in 'The Importance of Being Earnest' also flew over every Spanish editorial house's head and it was translated as 'The Importance of Calling Yourself Ernest'. They also call Thomas Moore 'Tomás Moro' over there.

No, Spaniards pronounce them as if they were Spanish words. Mexicans, on the other hand, pronounce Anglo last names much closer to the original.

I believe that translator justified it by saying the original title was a baseball analogy, but later translations were titled The Guardian in the Rye.

Yeah, Spaniards suck at translations. If Mexicans or Argentines were in charge, we would've had better translations. But sadly Spanish publishers have a kind of monopoly over this, or so-called legacy translations. I believe Alfonso Reyes said to Borges that he thought La importancia de ser Severo or La importancia de ser Franco would've been better titles.

It's actually Thomas More, not "Thomas Moore". And his Latin name was Thomas Morus so "Tomás Moro" is not so far from it. Pretty much every saint or religious figure for the Catholic Church has his name translated into other tongues. You Anglos call the current Pope "Francis" while his real name is Francisco.
