Honestly yes. For those who don't come from cultures that believe in demons, you can substitute that concept with something like infected-with-a-thoughtform perhaps. He was institutionalized for severe mental illness before, so maybe that's also an accepted Western explanation for how he looks, the air he gives off, the brutality of his works.
