let's be honest, both sides are cringe. most Protestants ignore literally everything Jesus taught about tolerance and community in favor of holding to Jewish law and inventing new, utterly bizarre rules, and most Catholics are polytheists-in-denial that perform borderline Satanic rituals. Protestants are glorified Jews, Catholics are glorified neopagans
the true Christians are those that read the NJPS OT once for context and then repeatedly read and reread NT in the original Koine Greek, focusing on Jesus' teachings in particular, and resist all attempts by organized religion to reinterpret Jesus and Paul

Preaching to the youth is very difficult when the boys and girls ages 0 to 18 dont go to church (their parents dont either). They then never go to church and never become believers. It is a complicated topic, consider, for example, that most sermons a pastor gives are meant for people with actual life experience. Themes include forgiveness and responsibility, which are for the most part meaningless to a child. I know that very well personally, when i was that age around 12 or 13 I thought I understood what my pastor was saying and the message he was giving. Then I started sinning for real and when I went to church everything became meaningful, it was completely different. So how do you get kids to have at least SOME interest in reading scripture?

I understand that the makers are really just trying to get people to read scripture and while they're intentions may seem good, they're really not. Not everybody should read scripture. I think Catholicism is the only true Christian tradition for a number of different reasons but the biggest is that the Gospels record Jesus establishing a Church and priestly hierarchy on earth and giving them the power to bind and loose, which essentially means that they have the power to teach Christian beliefs and that they can't assert false beliefs dogmatically since what is bound and loosed on earth and bound and loosed in heaven. Jesus then gives Peter the keys which in reference to ISA 22 and symbolizes the office of stewardship in Davids kingdom which was dynastic, so this means that Peter is given the office of stewardship in Jesus' kingdom on earth which is his Church. Apostolic succession is also established in Acts and is also evidenced throughout the early Church fathers like Clement, and because this succession is protected by the Holy Spirit, it will last until Jesus returns. The protestant reformation represents a complete break away from this tradition and is thus invalid and not true Christianity.

I think I've seen this argument before. It relies on a particular interpretation of the King James Version to the exclusion of the Septuagint or any other translations to come to the conclusion that the keys were also given to every other apostle. Even if we ignore the fact that this still disproves Protestantism, it's entirely unfounded. I think the text is pretty clear that only Peter is given the keys and that the keys themselves are distinguished from the powers of binding and loosing. If they were the same it would be completely unnecessary for Jesus to state that Peter and the apostles are getting the powers of binding and loosing and also getting the powers of binding and loosing. He would be repeating himself.

>>13724445
No this doesn't follow. I'm not making myself an astro physicist simply because I come to the more fundamental conclusion on my own that change is an actual feature of the universe. >I think I've seen this argument before. It relies on a particular interpretation of the King James Version
Look the fucking pronouns, please. They're plural when he gives the power of "binding and loosing" in Matthew 18. They're plural in English and they're plural in Greek. That's how the language works and it shows he's speaking to multiple people.
>to the exclusion of the Septuagint
To the exclusion of what? The Septuagint is a translation of the Old Testament. We're talking about the book of Matthew.
>or any other translations
Because modern translations lack second person singular/plural distinction regarding pronouns. You don't have any idea what you're talking about on a linguistic level.
>to come to the conclusion that the keys were also given to every other apostle. Even if we ignore the fact that this still disproves Protestantism,
And? Who said that I'm a Protestant?
>it's entirely unfounded.
He gives the power of binding and loosing to Peter in Matthew 16 and to all of the apostles in Matthew 18. What do Keys do? Think for just a moment --- they lock and unlock things. The same sort of language is used in Isaiah 22:
>And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.
Bind/loose shut/open lock/unlock. Keys do something. You act like they're just a meaningless symbol. What power do they symbolize other than what is actually given in the text?

>> No.13724480

I'm going to explain it fully one more time. I'm going to use the Douay-Rheims translations since you shouldn't have any problem with that. The first instance of "binding and loosing", spoken to Peter:
>Mt. 16:19 And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.
Note that pronouns are "thee" and "thou." These are singular forms of address, meaning Jesus is speaking to one singular person, i.e. Peter. This singular/plural distinction is lost in modern English so a modern translation will not reflect it unless it is included as a footnote.
The second instance of "binding and loosing," spoken to the Apostles:
>Mt. 18:18 Amen I say to you, whatsoever you shall bind upon earth, shall be bound also in heaven; and whatsoever you shall loose upon earth, shall be loosed also in heaven.
Note that the pronouns have changed from "thee/thou" to "you." In older English, "you" (and "ye") are plural forms of address, meaning that more than one person is being spoken to. The power of "binding and loosing" is being conferred upon multiple people, i.e. the Apostles generally.
Lastly, the power of "binding and loosing" is the Keys. That is what Keys do. Keys lock and unlock, they bind and loose. The same sort of language is used in Isaiah 22, which you referenced:
>Isa. 22:22 And I will lay the key of the house of David upon his shoulder: and he shall open, and none shall shut: and he shall shut, and none shall open.
Shut/open, lock/unlock, bind/loose. Keys symbolize the authority of fixing something in place or unfixing it. This power is conferred not solely upon Peter but upon all of the Apostles as a group.

σοί (to thee) is the dative of σύ, which is a second person singular pronoun (speaking to one person)

My knowledge on early modern English grammar may be a little shaky still so I don't know how anachronistic this may be but here it goes.

I also say to thee that thou art Rock: and on this rock I will build my convocation: and Hades' gates shall not overpower it. I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of the heavens: and whatever thou mayest have bound on the earth shall have been bound in the heavens: and whatever thou mayest have loosed on the earth shall have been loosed in the heavens.
https://biblehub.com/text/matthew/16-19.htm

Alternately one must not overlook the likelihood of this dialogue having originally been had in Aramaic. Here's a rendering I based largely on Syriac translations.

I also say to thee, that thou art Rock: and on this rock I will build my congregation: and the gates of Sheol/Sheol's gates shall not overpower it/prevail against it. To thee I will give the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and all that thou shalt bind on earth, shall be bound in heaven: and what thou shalt loose on earth, shall be loosed in heaven.
