I have the book in front of me, and although Joyce is great, and revolutionised literature, and I love his work, specifically Ulysses, to an extent, he is overrated, I feel he could have written something greater, and all his novels could have been written as one book, but in seeking a masterpiece and literary perfection, he got lost in his rubbish bin, which resulted in the three works
The wake alongside all else, is a slightly messy retelling of Milton's Paradise Lost, mixed with Joyce's personal life and all mythologies and knowledge etc. of human civilisation.
It is structured, alongside linguist strings, around the running of a stream, i.e the stream of consciousness, it is structured as if water is running down a creak/stream and over the rocks in the stream, alongside being multilayered so as to tell, in a humorous manner, the rise and fall of man.

Yes it's multilayered, as an existentialist work. this is one dimension of the novel, River run by Eve and Adam's, I assume is both about the testicles, urine, growing old, the River Liffey in Dublin, his wandering around the world, and the stream of consciousness structure, alongside as stated a messy retelling of Milton's paradise, it is also an account of the masterpieces of the world, Davinci, Michelangelo etc, alongside, the holy grail, king Arthur, and Moses' exodus out of Egypt and their journey through the promised land, in short is a stream of consciousness exhibition of Joyce's knowledge. it also contains such things as the four seasons, and his interpretation on the structures of human civilisation and such things as Freemasonry.
