For real though, which books of the Bible are actually worth reading? Even if you were a Christian, I don't see why you'd read all this crap about the census.

>> No.13572528

Start with the New Testament

>> No.13572531

I mean, it’s there. :3

It was kind of interesting seeing how vast the population became in so short a time, because they did the census twice, you know? That was the cool part for me

all of it, eventually
but you should've started with the Gospels, then the "poetry" section of the Old Testament, then the rest of the New Testament, then the rest of the Old instead of choosing some random book from the OT

>> No.13572600

>>13572543
I just showed you a page of the Bible that you shouldn't read. Same with the parts of first Kings about the design of the Temple and the buildings. Who gives a shit about how many cubits an archway is?

>> No.13572614

All of them. Read the New Testament from Matthew to Revelation, then the Ketuvim of the Old Testament (Song., Eccl., etc.) and the minor prophets, then the Pentateuch and the major prophets. Take it slow and read academic literature and commentaries as you go. Don't skip anything that seems boring or that you don't immediately understand.

A chronological read-through of the narrative sections is pretty fun, it all links together pretty well as a coherent story, and it gives you a historical framework to interperet the other books with. I'd recommend this order:

Genesis (skip: 5, 10, 36)
Exodus 1-24, 32-35, 40
Numbers 10-36
Deuteronomy 34
Joshua 1-13, 22-24
Judges
1 Samuel
2 Samuel
1 Kings (skip: 7)
2 Kings
Daniel 1-6
Ezra
Nehemiah
1 Maccabees
Luke
Acts

>>13572543
There is no "should", there are a million ways to read the Bible.

>>13572614
>Don't skip anything that seems boring or that you don't immediately understand.
I disagree, absolutely skip parts you aren't getting anything from. You can come back to them when you have more contextual knowledge, and you'll be richly rewarded. Even Leviticus is fascinating if you have an idea of its significance, but you'll hate it if you read it with no prior knowledge.

>> No.13572659

Am I doing wrong by starting at the beginning and just reading everything? I got through Leviticus.

Yea, the problem is, the Bible isn't meant to be read like that. If you don't understand the Moral Laws vs the Religious Laws of the Old Testament, you'll walk away thinking Christianity is no different than Islam.

Revelation is fucking based. Should be an essential reading for everyone regardless of religious beliefs or the lack of thereof.

It's literally just a standard example of the Apocalyptic genre. There are dozens of Apocryphal examples of this genre, many predating Revelations, not to mention that Revelations directly rips language out of previous Biblical books like Ezekiel and Daniel. This whole "Revelations is wacky trippy schizobabble" meme has to stop, it's not only just wrong but also actively impairs a fuller appreciation of the beauty of the text's historicity.

was raised by agnostic hippies
was encouraged to by parents to read dawkins
read all the 4 housemen of the atheist Apocalypse
>hitchens, harris, dawkins, dennet
figured it out, had my mind made up, they weren't going to "trick me" into some fake god story for children and sheeple, haha
proceed to tip fedora for years
turn 30
read about confirmation bias, and the dunning kruger effect
decide to just read the bible since they seem to shit on it so much in TV and pop culture
and really had only read other peoples (mostly jews) or *atheist jews opinion on it.
>decided on the KJV as it was the first English translation
>reading it straight through
>taken me about a year to get to Ezekiel
>truly loving it
KJV is fun and challenging, worth the read. But hey not every one likes to read
>some people just like to look at memes about reading

Consult the Columbia Core dude. Genesis, Job, Ecclesiastes, Isaiah, and the Gosepls. I’d personally recommend everything from Genesis (minus Leviticus and Deuteronomy) through Isaiah. Then the Gospels, then Revelations. At least that’s my /lit/ take.

The Anglicans and Lutherans have very good music, but their theology is not fully true.
My personal take as a Catholic (not trad, not progressive, just Catholic) is that Vatican II and all its weirdness has providential purposes, mainly to teach us that while the Church’s historical achievements in aesthetics and her ability to organize society are admirable, we must love God and our neighbor, and keep his ways even when these things are unavailable, lest we love created things more than their creator. Western Catholics have to see that the fruit we bear will reflect what is in our souls.
Hope that makes sense.

Oh yeah, I'm going to want to know how many women were among the Levites thousands of years ago. That's really going to be an ace in my pocket
