It is environmental in that men are highly expendable because they do not need to give birth. The nature of reproduction does enforce gender roles to some degree. The idea that women can be choosy and men must work for their mate is common amongst the entire mammal kingdom. The simple nature of a nine month pregnancy period for the woman versus the brief conceptual involvement of the man creates these sorts of differences. I think if we lived in a world where men and women somehow both shared pregnancy, your statement would hold merit. Right now it doesn't. Gender roles will never truly be a scoail construct until we develop and establish total artificial reproduction. Also, the author here is writing parody. Oh please, both women and men have been highly expendable for centuries. Hell, I think the ratio of men to women in India is something like 7:3 and is only getting worse. There is no reason to think men don't have the same capacity for the things OP describes as women.
