Seminal. First ideologies that posited that perhaps lightning bolts aren't thrown by Zeus. Not as flashy as religion, but also not as fucking retarded.

I've adopted a lot of his worldview from the letter to Menoeceus. There's a lot of pains of the mind, mental anxieties, which are major obstacles to leading a happy life, and often subtracting a pain is more important than adding a pleasure. Particularly, I found his argument against being anxious of death compelling, and I haven't really lost sleep over it since.
However, I tend to agree more with the Aristotelian view on things. There's suffering when one sees a dissonance between how they actually are versus what their innate moral sense says they ought to be like. And further, the most life affirming thing is to exercise virtue.

Benjamin Guggenheim
>"As Aubart and Sägesser reluctantly entered Lifeboat No. 9, Guggenheim spoke to the maid in German, saying, "We will soon see each other again! It's just a repair. Tomorrow the Titanic will go on again." Realizing that the situation was much more serious than he had implied, as well as realizing he was not going to be rescued, he then returned to his cabin with Giglio and the two men changed into evening wear.[1] Titanic survivor Rose Amelie Icard wrote in a letter, "The millionaire Benjamin Guggenheim after having helped the rescue of women and children got dressed, a rose at his buttonhole, to die."[7][8][9] The two were seen heading into the Grand Staircase, closing the door behind them. He was heard to remark, "We've dressed up in our best and are prepared to go down like gentlemen."[1] He also gave Etches, who survived the sinking, a message, which Etches wrote down: "If anything should happen to me, tell my wife in New York that I've done my best in doing my duty."[1] Etches reported that "shortly after the last few boats were lowered and I was ordered by the deck officer to man an oar, I waved good-bye to Mr. Guggenheim, and that was the last I saw of him and [Giglio]."[1] Guggenheim and Giglio were last seen seated in deck chairs in the foyer of the Grand Staircase sipping brandy and smoking cigars, ready to accept their fate without fear or hesitation."

Stoicism is fucking based.

I think epicureanism is one of the best thought schools ever. Unfortunately it is misinterpreted, because neoplatonists, stoics and christians defamed it. So many think epicureanism is something like hedonism, which is wrong.

Epicureanism had the most advanced understanding of nature in their time. They also had one of the best way to achieve ataraxia (=calmness).

Overall I think epicureanism is highly undervalued.

The inversion of >>13259251

There's a lot to take away from Epicurus, whether it be his thoughts on death or pleasure, but I generally find he is more correct when he is fumbling his way towards a proto-conceptualization of underdetermination or arguing against nothing as an entity than when he is trying to make a life ultimately as empty as ataraxia seem fulfilling.
