My doctor is trialing me on dexamphetamine (Australian version of Adderall) in order to improve my attempts at studying.

I love to read yet can barely finish a book. I haven’t been able to finish books consistently ever but I’ve always dismissed it as a product of the age we live in, and ubiquitous nature of the internet and screens to look at.

Will this help me read and study? I’d like to know what it’s like to be able to hold my attention on something for longer than a few minutes.

What did you say to get a prescription?

Gotta make sure you’re doing the thing you want to be doing when you pop the pill. It makes focusing easier.
But if you don’t set yourself up you end up drinking coffee and jerking off for 8 hours straight.

I was on various prescription, amphetamines, mostly dexamp, for four years of college and two years after it.
For me, they made it much easier to focus on nonfiction reading but harder to focus on fiction. On amps, the technical becomes way more interesting; reading about math, computing, and science becomes more engaging than ever before. But when reading a novel, one becomes bored and yearns for the end of the page; one thinks, "why am I doing this when I have to do X and Y and finish Z?" Granted this isn't the case for everyone, but most would probably agree. Can't recommend speed for retaining and deeply pondering fiction, but if you need to slog through a bunch of a novel for coursework it's not bad.

I know you didn't ask for this but if you're just getting into the stim game here's some advice for taking care of yourself and ensuring the most positive, sustainable use:
>Drink water, more than you think you need
>Limit caffeine unless you have unusual tolerances or need coffee/tea for other purposes
>Avoid fruit, juice, and strongly acidic food/drink until you're past the crest of the day; acids greatly interfere with amp processing in the body by speeding up excretion, which is bad in the morning but desirable when you want the stimulant out of your system later.
>Take a few modest supplements. You don't need to spend a ton or get anything experimental. Antioxidants: some of the good ones are vitamin E, selenium, astaxanthin, ashwaganda, ALCAR, idebenone; there are many others.Take decent fish oil and a multivitamin with the fat-soluble ones. Magnesium in the evenings is nice, as it counters damage from the stim and is also depleted by it. Aspirin is super cheap and protects the heart very nicely, but be wary of mixing it with other blood thinners.
>Appetite will be suppressed. Nuts are a good snack, enough calories and nutrients to tide you over without being oppressively filling.
>If you work out, you can do well and feel great on speed, but you absolutely need to watch your heart rate, drink water, and not overexert yourself.
>Take at least one day off a week from the drug. Your body will thank you.
>Set a schedule for yourself in advance. Without structure, it's easy to find yourself spending the whole day playing vidya or doing something else more immediately enticing than your work. Can help to have someone else ensure you spend your time well.
>Do your best to avoid all-nighters; with speed in you they're even less sustainable than sober. Your sleep is very important.
>Don't be alarmed if it feels like the med loses effectiveness. It will continue to be helpful even if the feeling of achievement is lessened.
>If you smoke cigs, on speed you'll probably go through them quicker than usual
Take care, OP. Hope some of this is useful.

whoops, should have mentioned curcumin among the antioxidants, it's definitely worth a try before something like idebenone.
OP, if you do read on speed you should totally reach for a copy of Godel, Escher, Bach. That's the optimal time to read GEB.

>> No.13201823

They are right about not taking much. Don't listen to your doctor if he tells you to take it every day just stockpile it has a 100 year half life. Start with around 5mg if you can split them small enough but it might not do much depending on your weight and metabolism.

IT will definitely help you read. Adderall works by releasing and inhibiting dopamine from being broken down so anything that interests you will give you an extreme drive where you tunnel focus and are constantly rewarded until you realize time stopped and its suddenly 12 hours later and your mouth is completely dry and your stomach is empty. Take it as infrequently as you can to avoid addiction.

My advice would be to use it like an SSRI and train yourself to get the drive to accomplish things without it through habit. Then get off it to avoid temptation and if you took the advice of taking it infrequently and stockpiling you should have a lifetime supply for emergencies or crunch week once a year.

>if you have nothing to begin with . . .
And no it's not like weed where people say you only think that your ideas are good, this only happens if I start writing or arguing with someone online, the quantity you can spew out while on dextro is not fantasy.
I also only take it like once a week.

There’s a lot of good advice in this thread, OP. Listen to the ones that sound like they’re looking out for your health and best interest. Obviously ignore the ones that are bragging about how cool it feels or how often they can take it with no problems.

I started taking it when I was 18 and used it intermittently throughout college. It feels really good but it didn’t make me a better student because I would just procrastinate until the last 2 hours before deadline rather than last 4 because I knew I could cram it in better. So it actually worsened my habit forming for years. I wish I had the discipline to understand its double edged sword. After college (I’m 25 now) I found a good psychiatrist who basically gives me like 90 pills a month. I only use it for crunch time at the office, so once a week at MOST. I stopped taking it recently for the past month because I felt myself getting manic, too happy, the masturbation problems that other ppl mentioned. Also I can’t get a decent boner on it anymore because it constricts your blood vessels I think. This didn’t happen when I was younger too. But I still feel horny so if I’m really fucked up I will just jerk on a limp noodle, yeah I feel like a loser junkie during those times.

So I’m basically off it completely and prefer a nice cup of coffee. But it has utility, it really does work. But anything that works that well is definitely problematic because it creates a dependency / reliance on it

God damn I could write so much on this shit now that I'm typing. The last post actually made me sad while typing because I have a very circuitous relationship with substance use but never quite got bad enough for rehab or deeply fucking up my life.

Addy and amphets also kill your appetite, and I was really into lifting and fitness from 20 until now, so I would even use to suppress my appetite and not eat for an entire day, just to try to get my body fat % down. Sort of like some of the psychos in the /fa forum. But it makes running and working out too easy when you're on it, so the offdays would be too hard. Thankfully I'm reformed off that shit and I never take it before working out, or if I do it's a really special circumstance like I have a really busy day and then have to fit in a 30-55 minute workout during a specific time slot in the evening. Good news is that I just run 30 miles a week now for leisure and to stay in shape and I'm doing ok.

But enough about myself. OP, I've always had time management and discipline problems myself. Addy has its merits, but its better to learn self control through other resources.

Resources I've used are a) talk therapy with a psychologist. Someone you respect or can form a relationship with. They don't fix you in one meeting. You go regularly weekly or every 2 weeks and work out your shit.

b) resources like books, podcasts, research articles, newsletter that are designed to increase your productivity. Other people suffer from these problems too, and the podcast versions are perhaps the most human where they talk about how they get through each and every hurdle, each and every temptation to fuck around on the internet or eat a piece of candy whatever. A great book is "Power of Habit". Bestseller list, blah blah. It's a quick read. Also random people post articles on how they focus throughout the day in op-eds on like Nytimes, Wall st journal etc.

I'm far from perfect myself. But I'm looking for long term sustainable happiness (as are a couple folks in this thread, which inspired me to vomit my 2...00 cents). Been looking for habits and patterns that I can take to my 30s, 40s, 50s whatever so that I can work on things that I love and make me feel fulfilled. And yes I've stared at a computer for 12.. 24 hours and somehow done nothing. Between 4chan, youtube, facebook, instagram, snapchat, whatever. They really do fuck us up.

Since it's /lit, I think Tim Wu has some cool books on the topic of platforms / apps trying to siphon our attention with distractions to accumulate tiny revenues that add up. One book is called "Attention Merchants" but he has others. As well as other researchers/ scholars who write on a similar subj
