It's the "shadow" a 4D cube would cast onto 3D space when rotated at a specific orientation.
2D squares consists of four vertices, each connected to two edges
Every vertex in a 3D square (cube) is connected to three edges
Every vertex in a 4D square (tesseract) is connected to four edges
The shape in OP's image is a 3D shape which is isomorphic to a tesseract in the way that it consists of 16 vertices, each connected to 4 edges. A 2D drawing of a cube is to the 3D cube as the 3D cube-within-a-cube is to the 4D tesseract
